A 3200m runner will transition to college much easier than a miler. And 2 mile times are more indicative of cross country success.
But it really depends.
If I'm building a program, I want aggressive and competitive mile guys. They are dependable and can't help but be competitive.
3200m guys are more "rhythm" runners are more likely to perform well immediately and have a higher potential level, but may not be competitive everyday. IMO
What about fast 800m times but lacking 5K endurance? Don't these athletes have more upside?
