Did the calf strain happen early in the run or late? I don't know cold weather actually CAUSES calf strains, but cold weather definitely makes your mucles stiffer and less pliable, at least until you get warmed up. I've had quite a few calf strains as I've gotten older, and they've occurred in cold and hot weather just from the old "too-much-too-soon" mistake. I recommend some good running tights to keep your legs warmer and to provide a little bit of compression support. This seems to have helped me.
