When I want to lose weight, I calculate my total daily energy requirements and then I subtract 500. Then I track the calories that I consume throughout the day. Once I reach my caloric limit, I STOP EATING. I simply use willpower. The same willpower that I use to not kill people.
Questions:
How old are you?
Are you married?
Do you have kids?
Do you have a full-time job?
My sister's obese and has decided that she wants to lose the weight. For exercise, she walks about 1 km over to Subway every evening to buy a sandwich. She also buys a large soda each time as a reward for "exercising". It has been explained to her how this strategy will not be effective, but she persists anyhow.
She has every opportunity to eat healthily and was thin and a decent runner in high school (sub-5:30 mile on basically zero training). I've come to conclude, same as the OP, that it is simply a lack of willpower on her behalf.
OP's subject is true. He is ignorant and has not walked in their shoes. True, you have superiority of character over those who have become overweight, little by little, because of bad, lazy and unthinking meal choices and lack of exercise. But there are people who gain weight because of traumatic injuries, catastrophic lawsuits and injustice. If you'd ever experienced such matters, you'd sympathize. When you're at least 30-40 pounds overweight, life becomes much different. To begin with, because of the slowed down metabolism, inertia of ill-health and lack of mobility,
the baseline lust for life, enjoyment and motivation that most young adults, much less vigorous runners, take for granted,
is completely lacking. It becomes a vicious circle, too, with hormones out of whack, nutrients not being absorbed properly, so that food takes on an emotionally therapeutic role and with unpredictable appetites, strange feedbacks and volatile mood. You can laugh at the idea of emotional therapy, but we live in a vicious, competitive and petty world. Job, social and political stress is everywhere in abundance.
I'll keep mum if any critics come forward and tell me about how they've fasted for more than 3 days: you, Sir, have iron-will power and walk the talk.
If you've ever been jailed undeservedly, lost friends or a job or professional status, been ostracized, etc. for standing up for a righteous cause, I will also defer to you. You, Sir, have iron-will power, morals and the superior high ground.
