Before the Industrial Revolution, nearly every able-bodied adult had a "job" - as a farmer, tradesperson, slave, etc. In the 19th century most people still had jobs but an increasing number couldn't cut it in modern society and ended up in almshouses or mental institutions. Cut ahead to modern society, and we have more technology and corporations than ever and yet a far lower employment rate. Corporations haven't really created jobs, they've only improved our living standards.
As another example, think about what happens when you give an already profitable company a tax break. Do they simply use that money to hire someone? Of course not, that would be stupid. A company is only going to hire someone if that extra person will enable them to make even more profit. Any company using profits to hire more people "just because" will soon be in the red.
Tax breaks given to corporations will always end up the in the pockets of the owners and shareholders (i.e. the rich), always. Some of this money will be used to outbid other rich people for paintings and penthouses, while the rest will be used to lobby politicians for more tax breaks.
