say a top 15oom runner- Jenny Simpson, does she have big muscular ventricles relative to her body size?

Yup
You need a med school student/doctor to tell you that?

I know, serious, you could just ask the priest from the Temple of Doom.
It's actually a great question. How enlarged are runner's hearts 'normally' I know that I recently had to pay way more for term life insurance due to my enlarged heart even with the doctor conceding it was due to my healthy lifestyle. Boy, was I pissed. So doctors, what's up with this??
Elite runners may have larger than average hearts, but running doesn't make your heart larger.

actually it does.
Yes. Highly trained endurance athletes have been shown to have ventricular mass (left) up to 50% greater then control. Also, hypertrophy induced by exercise is very different then the enlargement caused by say hypertension, which is bad.

Okay, but what if you are a fat guy who starts running to lose weight, wouldnt you have both types of hypertrophy???
Not sure how to answer that but i wouldn't think about it that way. Enlargment is a continuum, and the left ventricular wall usually gets thicker with age. If your health isn't contraindicative to losing weight and running (wish it almost never is) all changes brought about will be good ones.
heres a good picture from nature explaining the difference between the two types. Hope it helps
Also. Vascularisation and diffusions distances (the diastance between blood vessels) is not included in the picture. It differs between the two types and It is an important factor since it makes the tissue more att risk för hypoxia (the lack of oxygen)
so run, no cheese burgers
