Trail race Saturday. Funny story, maybe--I ran the shorter of two simultaneous events, and felt like a wimp for doing so, but my hs team had its conference championship that afternoon and I had to get back to drive and all. But at least I won the damn thing. Three guys took off at the start--I knew they were running the longer. Two other guys and I settled in to cruise; when I broke it to them that I was running the shorter, they were amusedly pissed... Won by over a minute, and not that fast, but it still felt good.
Will go easy, about 8 in town today.
Returned home from a tiring week overseas on Friday night with modest hopes of running much or well over the weekend. My low expectations were confirmed as I ran a fairly pedestrian 7 miler on Saturday morning, followed by a 3 mile loop with my son. Opted to do a local half marathon on Sunday to force myself to run long at an honest pace. Went much better than expected -- 1:14:43... Maybe a good part of this game is simply the art of managing expectations.
dfed, I wish I could run a 1;14 on good day..nice job..
Sat.:AM: 20 x 400m 86 Avg. 54 sec. recovery.
PM: 4 miles easy
Sun.: 2 hour hike with wife.
I wish that I could run for 75 min without walking numerous times.
I had a complete physical Friday and was told that if everyone was as fit as I am the doctor would be out of business. Then my 74 year old doctor proceeded to ran away from me this morning.
Old Man By The Sea, do you stretch your achilles every morning and before each run also as a habit year round?
When injured, I found that it was good to strech the achilles against the wall every hour all day. Make sure your toes are pointed in and then you will feel a good stretch when you lean the upper body in. Do all stretching gently and slowly. No jerking. Try finding out more about achilles stretchs on the internet.
These actions have helped me greatly over the last 30 years. One of our group is a prominent orthopedic surgeon. Another member is runner/podiatrist John Pagliano.

Just for grins, how old are you?
Orville, good of you to join us...I dont stretch very often ..I used to always pull something when I stretched...I guess I need to do something different...I read in another thread that achilles problems can come from overly tight hamstrings and gluts..??..if so , that could be the problem..Ive had very tight hams for a long time...Thanks for the tip Orville..
Saturday: Worked in yard cleaning up after 3 hurricanes.
Sunday: 5 mile road race at Univ. of Central Florida. Ran 28:56 for 3rd AG.
OMBTS: Hang in there with the achilles. My right one has been one of my weak links over the years. It WILL get better!
Orville you are an inspiration :O)Saturday 6 miles easy recovery from Fri 5x1200 in 4:14sSunday longer run of 12, getting chilly here and brrr I amnot looking forward to winter. Deep tissue massage can help tight muscles,I rely on and incorporate that type of body work into my training regimin. Wishing everyone a good week :O)
33:48 10k today in Seattle. 1st Master/ 4th overall
USTABFAST,
Great name by the way. I am 47, 48 in March.
OMBTS,
I am with Orville on this one, 5-10 minutes of achilles atretching first thing in the morning really helps. I had some PF issues a few years ago and started doing this stretch, face down on the bed with feet dangling off the end - stretch.....stretch. It worked. Became part of normoal morning routine.
Almost 50, great job on that 10k !
Starting some faster work after Chicago a fortnight back: 10 x200s at 34 off the rear of my xc team I coach and yesterday 10 x 1100m at 4min with 60 sec jog rest. geesh, we lose speed at our age ! Any tips for finding it again?
I am impressed by all the fast masters on this board. 1:14 half and a 33:48 by almost 50. Good running.
Saturday: 8 miles with a 2 mile tempo. Tempo was pretty slow, but I am moving in the right direction. 3 weeks after my last surgery.
Sunday: Slow 13 miles on hilly trails. Felt pretty tired last 3 miles but glad I could do it.
Have a great week everyone. OMBTS take care of that achilles.
Friday PM: 90minutes on rocky, muddy trails with a couple of fast miles on a golf course that intersects the trail. Sat: 8hrs of home repair. Sunday: sore from Friday's effort. Mon AM 45 bike. You speedy posters are an inspiration!
I read these posts often and decided to start contributing. I am a new master, was training for a Fall marathon and got injured which has happened twice now, both times a few weeks prior to the marathon. Just started back training and hopped into a race this weekend. Was a large charity race along the ocean in South Boston...VERY windy. I came in 2nd overall, just about 8 seconds behind first male. Was running with "comfortable effort" the entire time. My time was 90 seconds slower than my last 5M race before the injury, but I felt good and am planning to race again soon.
Saturday: 4M run on trails, 1 hour elliptical
Sunday: 12M total with 5M race @ 30:05

Maybe shorter sprints, like 100's (fully warmed up of course) progressively faster down to sub-15 or thereabouts, to revive that speed. Also plyometrics might get that foot strike happening a little more zippily.
The theme of achilles tendonitis is weaving in and out of the messages. Me too, its been lurking in the background, then into the foreground off and on since March 2004. What a pain in the heel!
With this problem, my "long run" Sunday was:
30 minutes easy running
weights
30 minutes running in deep water
.
.
Pulled calf muscle going down stairs in the evening.
Pathetic! compared to a year ago when I was running very strong, good speed, success. Once that achilles is tweaked, it just sits there un-healed, it seems. For a L O N G time!
There ARE alot of fit Masters out there. Good motivation & reading.
70 mile week (lost a day traveling back to the West Coast)
Sat am Hour on the Trails w/visiting family members
Sun am 10 miler (58 mins) pm 4 (after playing some touch football!)
ynot
Typical week for me. Between 35-40 (37 this week) with emphasis on quality and recovery rather than more miles. Just hard to run more than 5 days without getting injured. The 2nd day off does seem to be the trick for me though.
Sat: 7 easy-followed a tough run on Friday
Sun: Off
Glad to see some new people posting on this thread. OMBTS, patience my friend.
