Wow Brett Larner has a stick up his butt; calls out Shalane Flanagan b/c angry press release didn't mention Japan chick

Fukushi has attempted this before in Osaka 2008 and blew up deluxe, she's a chance for sure. Think Kawauchi but more talented.

If Berlin wants to mention a 2:22:02 in a press release, that's kind of up to Berlin, isn't it?

I am trying to understand how I should think that a 2hr 24 min marathon runner is more talented than a 2hr 08 min marathon runner who fits his training in around a part-time job.

Boston is not a, "record quality" course. The 2:03:02 run there should be evidence enough of that

It's just a fact that Boston is not recognized by IAAF to be record eligible - so her 2:22 is indeed not on a IAAF "certified" course.

However, Larner does seem to have some anti-US thing going on. He thoroughly enjoys comparing Japan to the US on both the collegiate and professional level. I know nothing about him, but not surprising for a North American now living in Japan. His allegiance lies with the country he lives in.

Honestly, the press release thing isn't only about Shalane being a potential winner (arguably more so than Fukushi) - she also has some outside appeal being a white blonde in Germany.

I will be happy when Fukushi kicks Flanagan's butt.

Larner doesn't have some anti-US thing going on. He merely likes to point out that Kawauchi's top-5 (or whatever) times for the year are better than the top-5 by ALL Americans. Interesting point. How you take it is up to you.

My comment might be inflammatory, but it is accurate. "Aided" is not the same thing as being "not record eligible". The NYC Marathon course is not record eligible either and no one would call that course "aided". Everyone all of a sudden thinks Boston is "aided" just because 2011 was ridiculously fast due to the large tail wind. That does not mean that automatically every year is now "aided". Point in case, the winning time in 2012 was around 2:12:40.

He took an unnecessary dig at Shalane because he feels the Japanese runner should have been highlighted in the press release before Shalane was.

His comment wasn't outrageous, but his stuff does come across as anti-American at times, which is why I get sick of it and started a thread. I can't remember what it was about, but I LR and him had a bit of a debate going back and forth after he was angered by something they said about Japanese runners in their weekly recap. He also made a big to-do once because Flotrack didn't link to him or something.

Like I said, big stick up his butt.

2012 was slow because it was hotter than balls. They'll even run slow in Berlin, Frankfurt and Rotterdam if it's in the high 80's.

You are correct in that NYC is not record eligible, because the S/F separation is too great. But Boston is still aided because it's a huge net downhill. Sure, there are hills that slow it down, but try running it backward and see how fast you run.

Last year's women's race was a great example of how fast you can run there when you run hard from the gun. If the race provided rabbits, we'd see silly times, and not just in the big tailwind years.
