Fortunately for Garry, Rodgers stoppped to retie his shoe laces three times....
Rogers did not stop in the oly trials 10k to retie his shoes. You must have that mixed up with a marathon Rogers did.

Amazing the '80 results in all events including the marathon when everybody knew we weren't going to the Games!
Somebody refresh my memory on this - I thought the boycott had been threatened beforehand, but there was still some hope we'd go to Moscow. And that the decision didn't become final until after the trials?
If my memory serves, the US boycott was pretty much in place by spring '80. Perhaps others can help...otherwise I'd have to go thru old running mags to confirm.
Garry Bjorklund ran a 2:10 at the '80 Grandma's Marathon, skipping the Trials in May so...I'm thinking the boycott was on.
The results from the '80 Trials 5000m are rich w/a ton of fast names!
To the best of my recollection, the boycott was indeed pretty set by the Trials. Carter started threatening in January. Sometime that spring they set it in stone. The OT Marathon was in May, and everyone knew it was for naught.
The whole thing was a big mistake, and it did nothing to stop the war in Afganistan.
The boycott was announced in February as an 'if the Soviets don't pull out of Afghanistan...' type of announcement. I can't recall if there was a deadline for this to occur.
I think a potential boycott was mentioned in Carter's State of the Union address in January of 1980.
joke.
Do you have the 1976 5000m and 10000m trial data? I would like to see that as well
we have a guy here at work who says he ran the trials in indy. i would assume 5k or 10k. but he is pretty cryptic about the whole thing and how fast he actually was. was that 84 or 88? beenthere do you have those results?
thanks a lot.

Thanks,
didn't find him but really appreciate the results. Safe and injury-free wishes to all.
Now this is what I call a great thread. Thanks for all the results. While you are at it, do you have the 800, 1500 and Steeple? Is there a link to obtain these results?
What happened in the heats of the 5K in 1988? I noticed that Padilla was 7th and should hage been a non qualifier as it was first 4 and fastest 2.

Notice that there are 24 men in the Semis, yet if in fact they only took the top 4 and the next 2, you would only get 14. I figured that there was a typo, and that it should have been the next "12," then, having nothing better to do, went through the results to calculate and see if I was right, and I was. The top 2 non-top-four runners from the first heat qualified, the top 4 from the second heat, and all 6 from the third heat. Thus, it was simply a typo. It should have read "The Top 4 finishers plus the next 12 fastest."
That said, where did these results come from? I would be very curious to look over some of these old Olympic Qualifying results.
Does anyone else find it said that Gabe Jennings has the 2nd fastest time in the 1500?
Oy vey.
I noticed Jerald Jones running 4th place in the 1980 trials in the 5000m. I also know he is a sub-4 miler, but he seems to be kind of an unknown for a 3:58/13:35 type. Does any one else know any info about this runner?
