Hi, this question actually relates to my girlfriend's speedwork. Influenced by me (questionable decision probably) she has signed up for her first marathon after years of limited to no running (three half marathons in the last two years though). My question is what pace she should be doing her speedwork at, as I have never really been in her situation. Pertinent facts:
Her goal is to finish (no specific time) a marathon in October.
Her go-to pace for mid-distance to long runs is 12-13 minutes per mile pace.
She is currently running ~33 miles per week.
During speedwork (400-800 yard sprints, yasso, etc) she pretty easily does 7:30 pace, and can do short bursts closer to 6 or faster.
My uncertainty is essentially that her ability to sprint is much much higher than her ability (maybe desire) to maintain any real pace over a long period of time. For example Yasso guidance of 800 repeats works out to something like a 4 hour marathon based on her speedwork ability, but she is aiming for something closer to 6 hours.
What is a realistic goal for the race? Relatively how fast should she be doing speedwork? Any suggestions welcome.
