NCAA Athlete Sues Coach, School

That is pretty intresting. I'd like to know how this turns out.

This should serve as a cautionary tale to HS kids looking to go to a school. There is SO much to consider. As a runner more than likely this is IT for you. Most aren't going on to post-collegiate careers as runners. When chosing a school you have to look at the school and the degree you want, the program as a whole, and the personality of the coach and his philosophy. All stuff that is hard to find out on a recruiting trip.

I'd hate to lose 2 years of college running because I got into an argument with the coach about a girl in my room or something like that.

Conversely, a coach can't find out if an athlete is going to have problems with authority or general team rules on a recruiting trip either.

No, he doesn't have a case, but the courts will hear it, and it will cost both sides lots of money, and nobody will come out ahead. Bottom line, Stephane should have folowed coach's orders. Booting him off hte team for disobeying him is acceptable.

Redwine is a class act!!! The coach has the authority to enforce team rules and to tell an athlete what to do!!!!

No court will uphold the athlete in this situation.

As most of you can imagine there is more to this story then we know but regardless if a Coach tell's you to leave the hotel room, just leave, the end.It is not a democracy or open to debate.

Another example why Daddy shouldnt have little Johnny on his team..it may not have anything to do with it..but...

It is reasons like this that outside the US people think the whole college system is a joke

The coach can at least talk to the HS coach such and try and get a feel for the kid. You know the host on a recruiting trip isn't going to tell a visitor "Don't come here, our coach is a jerk, we run too much/not enough. Stay away from this program if you value your running at all."

Few things, Coach Redwine is a great man and a person of honor and good character. Coach Redwine can have his son on his team and still enforce all team policies as he sees fit. Coach Redwine has done NOTHING WRONG, as I see it, this a Canadian wanting to get his college education free and not put a whole lot of time and effort into track. Maybe coach Redwine cut the young man because he wasn't good in the jumping events and let the kid down easy by saying that he didn't follow team rules very well.

especially after a DFL at Big XII outdoors

a scholarship is a one year renewable contract. the coach can get rid of you for any reason he wants at the end of the year. and if you violate rules you can be dismissed immediately, and either leave school, or pay the pro-rated amount for the remaining cost of attendance.

funny, these committees that "reinstate" scholarships, are often the same people who remove academic money when a student falls below a 3.0. complete double standard.

if you are getting a free education, it is your JOB to do what your BOSS (coach) says. If that is go for a 1 hour run, or follow a curfew, or tap dance, then so be it.

a free education is not without responsibilities. If a school is going to make a $40k+ investment in you over 4 years, you better be damn sure you are willing to do what is asked of you.

If people outside the US think the college system is a joke, how come so many athletes from other countries take advantage of it.

Let me in on the joke. Did you fail to make your college team or are you just another disgruntled wannabe upset with your own shortcomings.

There is no reason a coach should have to put up with BS from someone the university is paying to run.

And don't think coaches from other countries and types of programs put up with this either. Mouth off to your club coach or as a member of a sponsored team and your ass will be on the grass - watching.

Look, if the kid broke team rules, he deserved to be disciplined. Isn't it obvious we are only hearing one half of the story here?

By the way, the kid isn't an employee. He has the honor of being on a track and field team, as well as receiving money to do so. The problem that coach Redwine didn't forsee was that the kid would be a winer and would make a lawsuit out of this.

A contract does not mean that your boss can make unreasonable requests of you. This is why we have workplace safety laws, minimum wage, etc. and do not follow a laissez-faire approach to business. Being boss does not give you free reign.

I have to add to your point. A college coach is NOT a boss in a typical employer/employee sense. Why? An athlete is not an employee (actually the coach is the employee - of the university). I completely understand that a coach has to have rules and enforce those rules. Obvioulsy we don't know the whole story here. I would be surprised if he was kicked off the team solely based on this situation. There was a compatibility issue here. I think it's difficult to have a coaching staff, team of athletes, academic environment, and campus life that are all completely compatible with each other.

i think that redwine blew it way out of proportion and hes being an ass to kick richards off. I know richards, Ive been on a canadian team with him and he is a nice guy...quiet and polite, and not a trouble maker by any means. this whole thing sounds crazy and I am glad he is suing them, I hope he wins. redwines an ass

also, about foreigners, we come for the comepetition, and in some peoples case....the scholarships. its not because america is such a great place or anything like htat.

You are doing damage to the cause of all Americans (like myself) who defend teams with international representation. Take your spoiled brat feeling of entitlement back home, asshole.

Correction most Canadians and foreigners come for the scholarship and over 70% of them end up staying in the States.I would say about 10% come for the competition.This is only my opinion take it with a grain of salt.
