Jonathan Gault's recap of what he learned at the press conference today is now up. If you watched the main press conference broadcast by Pre, you missed these comments.
If you turned into the broadcast portion of the pre-race conference expecting fireworks, you left disappointed but things got a bit spicy when LRC talked to them individually as Ingebrigtsen clearly was bothered by Kerr's pod...
Kerr’s comments on that podcast were out of line and far more personal than any Jakob has ever made. Whatever you think of Jakob or the trash he has talked, I’ve never heard him attack the character of any of his competitors in the way Josh attacked him and his family.
Josh had some interesting points on the "Sunday Plodcast" last month that we became aware of this week. The main tactical point Josh wanted to make and he said he hoped Jakob was interesting was that he is vulnerable in tactic...
“If I dislike someone and I have something I want to say to them, I approach them and I confront them and tell them what I mean, what I want“
I’m just wondering if Jakob has confronted Kerr with this or if he reserves his comments for interviews. You know, like he’s criticizing Kerr for doing.
Nevertheless it is oddly personal and in that respect seems kind of one sided though again it's sport being weirdly antagonistic towards the big dog is fair game imo
I just watched the press conference. Incredibly awkward. Jakob was easily the most tense I've ever seen him in a setting like that. He kept his head straight forward during the early going, instead of naturally turning toward Kerr as he spoke.
The presser would have been much better served with Paul Swangard getting the relationship question out of the way right off the bat, instead of a lame "Know each other?" joke followed by plenty of nothingness until LetsRun asked the question.
Kerr handled it fine. He was always going to give a straightforward answer. Jakob was the wild card. It was unbelievable the relationship segment didn't include a followup question to Jakob, asking directly about Kerr's comments last fall. Jakob wouldn't have gone as far as he did during the LetsRun solo interview linked in the OP, but there would have been something.
A juicy something that would have been the standout moment. He's always good for a memorable line. Instead it should have been a massive long shot for a boring presser but that's what it was allowed to be.
Steve Cram or Tim Hutchings or the British female commentators as moderator never would have allowed it to evolve the way it did. Every time I want to give Paul Swangard the benefit of a doubt he returns to PR level crap. Leigh Diffey would have known what to ask.
Kerr, triumphantly reveling in the delighted ecstasy of the Hayward Field crowd after setting the mile world record, approaches Jakob as he is bent over on the track. Jakob’s skeletal frame is heaving, shuddering, unable to breathe after choking on Kerr’s dust for the last 3 minutes and 41 seconds of arduous competition. Slowly, Jakob raises his head to meet Josh’s gaze as Kerr’s menacing shadow envelops him in darkness, literally and figuratively. Jakob’s face, flushed red from exhaustion and humiliation, is strained in the agony of defeat once again. Kerr nudges Jakob’s thin, suffering body and utters only a simple question: “Who’s your daddy?”

You found the being surrounded by yes-men comment an out of line attack against Jakob's family? Have you watched any other sports? Conor McGregor compared the wife of his opponent, Khabib, to a towel for wearing an Islamic garb. Jorge Masvidal said he wanted to end his opponent, Ben Askren's, bloodline.
Kerr's comments were extremely tame by comparison. Runners are so soft.
Yea, saying "surrounded by yes -men" doesn't seem all that personal or disrespectful to me. Perhaps there were other comments I haven't heard of - I didn't listen to the podcast.

Yeah what a great example - a bunch of low iq morons with brain injuries. True role models.

Despite me being a Jakob fan I think you’ve got a point here. -Coward or cowardly is clearly not what Josh has been through his interviews. He has just been honest about how he views things… Saying all that, I would add that if Jakob had chosen to call Kerr’s sayings stupid or petty I think that would be far more accurate…
