1) Ryun 3:55
2) Chapa 28:32
3) Lindgren 8:40 (indoor??)
4) Nelson 8:36 (I think it was very hot..in the 90's)
4) Lindgren 13:44
5) Pre 8:41
6) Webb
I think Ritz could have broken the 10K if he had run it.

81'. That's my vote.
Sorry, I forgot Trautmans 3000 record. 86 Penn Relays nobody around him. Took off with 200 to go. That has to be right up there.

As I said before, I am a distance guy but I have to admit that not all of the top performances by high schoolers were distance runners. It is true that there are too many distance junkies on here that do not pay enough attention to the rest of the sport. If you are a true track and field fan, you should educate yourself about the history of the sport in all events.
Nothing compares to Mathais's Gold medal as a junior in high school. Not only is that amazing on its own, but it was only his third (I believe and maybe only his second) decathlon of his life at that point.
Like I said before, Martin's 20.13 twice in the same year is ridiculous also. If you go by the Hungarian Tables, it equates to a 13:11 5k and 27:34.
Carter's shot, interestingly enough, was 67-9 as a high schooler with the college shot. He did not throw it much, so it is possible he could have thrown farther with more experience with it.
Keep in mind, also, that Martin ran 20.13 against high school competition, not in an open or international race.
Rudy ran 4:05 (mile) and 8:51 (2-mile) as a HSer. The 10,000m races were at the Florida Relays in March and Drake in April. The IN state meet was in late May.
Gompers never ran 2:10.
My opinion is that the greatest high school performance was NOT a male distance race. Chapa's 10k and Lindgren's 5k were impressive, as was Webb and Ryun. However, there is really no comparison when you throw in McTear's 100yd dash, Carter's shot put, Mathias's Olympic Gold in the Deca. and even Decker's 800m as an 8th grader.
81-f***ing feet is ridiculous! Never be beaten. Ever.
I also think that Roy Martin's 20.13 is pretty impressive as well. What makes thatmore impressive is that he did it twice, the exact same time, in about a four week span of time.
Everyone loves to talk about Webb and the other distance runners. Hell, I am a distance guy as well. But, you can't really argue with a gold medal in the Olympics as JUNIOR in high school. Next time you are at a high school track, just pace off the 81-feet and see where it lands!
I used to think Carl's long jump was pretty impressive too until it was beaten.
