Walker's 3:49.08 run 40 years ago is superior to a similar time run today in the super shoes.
Same reason I believe Cram's 3:46.32 is better than Kerr's 3:45 for British record (not better than Jakob's 3:43 Euro record though)
In general, a record where you are contending for the win/near top in the world is going to feel superior. Kerr’s win was plenty great so I don’t know if I agree. But Beamish sandbagging a 3:49 to finish mid-pack is nowhere near Walkers run. Hopefully if/when he sets it, he’s more competitive in the race.
Neguse had a rabbit the entire race and super shoes. Webb ran solo with old style spikes. A 3 second difference for those factors is reasonable. Neguse is a great runner and likely will have more medals and records than Webb, but for me, the nod goes to Webb for this AR, but it is close. Just my opinion.
Beamish has an outstanding kick which did not factor at Pre. Hopefully he will get sharper by the Olympics.. Hope he sticks in with the leaders no matter which race he chooses because his kick makes him a contender.
No, he was 0.01 away from the NZ record, super unlucky
Kind of glad.

I also agree; plus Cram closed that race in 53 seconds for the last lap. I think prime Cram is better than current Kerr at 1500; also ran 1:42 for 800/2:12 for 1k the same year he ran 3:29 and 3:46.

Well 3.43.x is pretty exceptional no matter what but special mention does need to be made of that Webb record. Like this wasn't at Monaco, Zurich, Olso or even Pre with crowd behind you and some nice little LED lights buzzing round the track at 56.0 second pace - Webb did this in a meet that was seriously akin to a club meet in a Belgium town that has under 40'000 residents.
Race Video and interview of Alan Webb going after the American Mile record that had been held by Steve Scott (3:47.69). Alan Webb breaks the American Record ...
(shout out to my old mate Ray Flynn who was on the infield there)
Pretty crazy stuff to think that at the time this was the 8th fastest time in history. The venues for the first 7 times? Rome (2), Rieti, Oslo, Berlin (2), Helsinki. It's not bad.

I've mentioned this a few times lately on the boards - 53.13 seconds - incredible. He was 2.53.19 through 1209m which equates to a 2.51.9 1200m. In the Nice 1500m WR he was 2.49.66 - over 2.3 seconds faster. There is zero doubt in my mind that if Cram crosses 1209m in 2.50.5 he could still have run in the low 54's to close that out.

in the 'Running With the Boys' series about NAU there's an interesting moment when Beamish talks about getting injured multiple times early in his college career and barely being able to walk, let alone run. He says at any other program he would have been cut and his running career probably over. but Smith kept him on scholarship, kept working with him, and within a year he won the mile at the NCAA Championships.
whenever I see him turn on his patented 'Textbook George' kick I imagine it's the few years he spent on crutches, kind of lost and humbled, where he found his character and inner strength that helps him finish races so strong.
