Female runner (23) here, back at it after some time as a casual runner. I've been running for about 7 years, I took it pretty seriously in high school (started junior year) and only ran my freshmen year in college, avg about 40 miles per week, sometimes upwards of 60 in the summer. My xc PR is 20:20, never ran a 5k on the track, but my mile PR is 5:30. I just started bumping my mileage up and this past week I started workouts. On Wednesday I ran a race in 21:09 on a trail 5k run, that is pretty flat, but soft footing. Similar to where my PR is set.
My workout on Sat.
5x1000 @ about 3:55 (very consistent, 3:56, 3:54, 3:54, 3:54 and 3:53) with a 50m walk and 150 m jog back to start, about 2 minutes give or take).
Sunday did a 10 mile long run.
and have been running about 35 miles per week within the past few months of easy running about 8:30 pace. Taking a day off.
What workouts should I be doing? I really liked the 5x1000, but it was a hard effort and I'm pretty sore today. Tonight I had planned to do faster intervals with longer rests, but I don't have a lot of 5k geared training in my experience, a lot of mile and two mile stuff I'm tempted to do, but might make me sore and not do much good for a 5k.
Race again on Wednesday (every Wednesday this summer). Same course. I expect I might have some to improve for pacing and running the course intelligently, but as for fitness I know it will take weeks of workouts to make a difference.
Thanks for your help!
