I ran against this kid saturday at the 3A qualifer meet in the 1600. He obviously has great speed to be able to run 2:00 in the 800. Not to mention he's small and looks exactly like a 7th grader.

13 seems real old to be a 7th grader. I was 13 in the 9th grade.
and ran sub 2:00 for the 800

14 in 8th grade, 15 in 9th, 16 in 10th, 17 in 11th, 18 in 12th. Is that old?
You obviously were young for a 9th grader. I was 13 as well for a 7th grader.
Nonsense. Most 7th graders turn 13 during the school year. Younger ones turn 13 in the summer.

Really? That surprises me a little. I just kind of assumed he was "mature" for his age. Either way, he is one fast 13 year old!

Obviously the point was to differentiate the race from the 1600 and perhaps more so to make it clear he meant a mile and not a 1600 which is the far more commonly run distance.
A 1600 is a 1600. A mile is a mile. No need to complicate things.
Do we say "full 1600" to make sure no one thinks we are talking about the 1500 (or the less popular 1590)?
Indeed! But yeah he looks probably just over 5 foot. He should improve his times quite a bit once he matures and gets taller, as long as his training stays consistent and he stays healthy.
Dolan is a prototypical 800M runner. We have felt for at least 5 years that he would be a track star. This is his first year running. There is a ton of excitement and attention given to his performances this year. We are very grateful. We also recognize that he is a 13 year old boy. We are going to encourage him to shut it down after next weeks State meet and go back to enjoying his childhood.
As an undergrad I wrote an essay that included reference to "the very real fact that..." Prof still mocked me about that one years later.

I hate you
Sorry, meant that for the "discouraged" guy

To be honest, its a bit discouraging too see that his mile isn't any faster considering that 800 speed. Definitely more speed based.
no that is very common for a child so young, not discouraging at all. The endurance will come with more training.

One of the dumbest posts that I have seen in awhile. For an experienced runner aged 20+, you would be spot-on. This kid is in 7th grade though. Even for high schoolers, 2:00 is roughly equivalent to 4:30 (based on # of kids who achieve those times). In my state the D2 qualifying times are 2:00.xx and 4:30.xx. This is the norm.
Agree. 2:00 and 4:30 are pretty much spot on with "charts" both equal in performance. 7th grader as well! Geez
Are/were any of his relatives good runners?

Thanks for the update! I'm glad to hear you aren't pushing him too hard. Lots of talented kids have been burned out by too much running too soon. I hope Dolan is having fun with all of the attention! Just curious, do you have any idea what Dolan's 400m speed is? You (I assume it was you) mentioned Dolan is a good baseball player, too. Is he going to play ball this summer? Obviously, you don't have to answer if you don't want to. I'm not sure how familiar you are with this message board, but it can be brutal and immature. A lot of insightful posters have been run off by the trolls.
