Wisconsin put three in front of Robert Cheseret of Arizona, Bernard Lagat's brother and generally considered the favorite for the title this fall (at the very least, a co-favorite)... however, it's tough to gauge much from the race because there weren't very many accomplished studs in the race. Sure, the ASU guy and Carlson of UM are good but still... last year the race had Kangogo, Cheseret, Gavin Thompson, etc. At the same time though, Wisco's 1-2-3 punch of Teg, Bairu and Solinsky is very good, so maybe the talent at the top this year wasn't really worse - just half of it was on Wisco's roster. Either way, those three guys looked to be in excellent form, putting all of their respective margins of distance on the ASU guy, Cheseret, Carlson, etc. in the last 2k. Specifically, Teg barely looked to be working hard and did not kick - the same of which can't be said for Bairu and Solinsky who seemed to be laboring a little at the end (but, for those guys... when don't they?) To tell you the truth, Cheseret did not look very smooth but it's still pretty early in the season.
After watching the way Wisco's top three runners manhandled that field Saturday, I'd say there may be a relatively large chance for a 1-2-3 finish at nationals for them... keep in mind I say relative. There are of course many other phenomenal runners out there (Cheseret, Hall, Meindl, Gonzales, McDougal, Willis, Brannen, Boit, Kiplagat, Smyth, etc.) and it is early still - I'm just saying that I think they have a better chance of doing it then Stanford did last year, i.e. Wisco's top three this year is better then Stanford's top three of last year, who was damn good.
