There's a difference between a theory and a theroem. A theory can't be proved or disproved in the sense of propositional logic, while a theorem can.
We don't know that there's a force that accelerates objects towards Earth; we just know that such an idea has held true in every experiment that has been run.
A: An object is released into midair
B: The object accelerates towards the ground
We can't prove that A-->B; all we know is that B has happened every time that A has.
Actually there's a perfectly good explanation for this. It's the buoyancy factor. A helium balloon has a density of less than that of air, and due to the buoyancy factor it rises. Essentially it floats on air int he same way that wood floats on water.
