Is Washington, D.C. a state or a country?
-5/10
It's actually a protectorate.
its a federal district, similar to, but different from territories like Guam, Puerto Rico, and the US Virgin Islands
It's an independent principality, kind of like the vatican or luxembourg.

it's a continental island
It's technically a cesspool that should be given back to Maryland.
From Wikipedia;
Washington, D.C., formally the District of Columbia and commonly referred to as Washington, "the District", or simply D.C., is the capital of the United States. The signing of the Residence Act on July 16, 1790, approved the creation of a capital district located along the Potomac River on the country's East Coast. As permitted by the U.S. Constitution, the District is under the exclusive jurisdiction of the Congress and is therefore not a part of any U.S. state.
The states of Maryland and Virginia each donated land to form the federal district, which included the preexisting settlements of Georgetown and Alexandria. Named in honor of George Washington, the City of Washington was founded in 1791 to serve as the new national capital. In 1846, Congress returned the land originally ceded by Virginia and created a single municipal government for the remaining portion of the District in 1871.
Washington, D.C., had an estimated population of 646,449 in 2013, the 24th most populous place in the United States. Commuters from the surrounding Maryland and Virginia suburbs raise the city's population to more than one million during the workweek. The Washington Metropolitan Area, of which the District is a part, has a population of 5.8 million, the seventh-largest metropolitan area in the country.
The centers of all three branches of the federal government of the United States are in the District, including the Congress, President, and Supreme Court. Washington is home to many national monuments and museums, which are primarily situated on or around the National Mall. The city hosts 176 foreign embassies as well as the headquarters of many international organizations, trade unions, non-profit organizations, lobbying groups, and professional associations.
A locally elected mayor and 13-member council have governed the District since 1973. However, the Congress maintains supreme authority over the city and may overturn local laws. D.C. residents elect a non-voting, at-large Congressional delegate to the U.S. House of Representatives but the District has no representation in the U.S. Senate. The Twenty-third Amendment to the United States Constitution, ratified in 1961, grants the District three electoral votes in presidential elections.
Almost none of that is true
It's a Duchy ruled by the hereditary Duke of the Potomac.
It's just like the Duchy of Grand Fenwick, but not as funny.
What would George Washington say about Washington DC?

You're close, its a swamp. Swamps are usually full of pests and diseases like Mosquitos, Malaria, and Dysentery.
It seems despite our best efforts to drain the filth nothing has changed in 500 years.

"Home sweet home." He was born there, why do you think his name is Washington?
George from Washington -> George Washington

George Washington was born in Washington State, not Washington D.C.
Wrong. He captured Washington State from the British during the war of 1812.
It's a country
its a planet

Wrong again. He lost the war of 1812 to Canada.
Doesn't matter because in 100 years George Washington will be the most vilified man in American history because he owned slaves. The ball has started rolling with the Confederate monuments and eventually will lead to men like Washington and Jefferson being axed from our history books. States, cities, streets, buildings, universities - all will be renamed. My money is on the Washington Monument and Jefferson Memorial no longer standing in 2150.
