The Wergeld applies mainly to Norse and Anglo-Saxon societies and does not seem to have been universally applied (e.g. Gretter the Strong). greater Outlawry, Lesser Outlawry were more common than the Wergeld.
The fierce and mighty Erik the Red was a little too fierce and mighty for Norway and was outlawed to Iceland, land of the outlawed. Soon he was outlawed from there too and boldly set sail through seas filled with icebergs and giant serpents until he reached a land so green and fair the only name for it was Greenland. His son, despite being a lily-livered christian, fared further west and discovered America, the land of grapes.
If modern justice reinstituted wergilds and outlawing, outlaws would soon colonize the moon and mars.
