Cushioned or not? Thick or thin? No show or 1/4? What are the advantages / disadvantages? I'd like to hear all opinions. Thanks.

I've been using thin nylon socks for the last 40 plus years. Before that, I mostly used no socks at all.
I used to get the socks from Kmart but now get them from Walmart. I wear the white ones for running, and brown or black for daily activities, but am barefoot most of the time.
I don't wear socks unless I am running. I use thin, merino no-shows that have a lip thing on the back to avoid rubbing. I cannot stand cushioned socks. They are kind of expensive, but I have 4 pairs. They are all lifetime guaranteed and I have taken advantage of the offer on more than one occasion. I do buy new pairs if I feel like I got decent usage out of them prior to any holes.
Anyway, FWIW.
I second the merino wool suggestion. They are my favorite! I wear thin smartwools and feetures mostly. Feetures are polyester and nylon but they have a really nice fit. I like thin socks because they seem to have a snugger fit on my foot and it just feels better to me. Thick socks alter the fit of shoes and seem to make my feet not feel as secure in the shoe.
Cushioning of a sock and thickness are going to a personal preference. The best way to prevent blisters is by not wearing cotton socks while running. Wool and polyester make excellent materials for running socks due to their moisture management properties.

try swiftwick. Love em.
Wrightsocks makes dual layer socks that do a pretty good job preventing blisters. Both layers are fairly thin so no having to worry about much cushoning.
The are the only socks I've run in for 15 years.

I used to sneer at xpensive sox, but I bought two pairs to try, after reading about them on lrc.
Then soon I discovered I was running in the same two pairs everyday because they were so much better than my other socks.
So bought a bunch more - best socks I ever had.
