Emmanuel was 39 seconds up on Farah at 35k. Yet was caught at 40k. So he was losing 10+ seconds per mile but he held him off at the end?
Clearly he wanted to beat Farah as a matter of pride.
When i noticed Mutai running ahead of Farah, it reminded of NCAA action where a guy goes out hard at NCAA cross, totally blows up and is packing it in until he sees a hated rival from his conference. Suddenly, he's not dead any more and finds the will to kick it in.
Pretty funny stuff.

That's because they're close to the finish and mentally it's easier to muster up a bit more energy to push. You rarely see this in the middle of a race.
