Our coach was present for every workout. He was never present for any easy days or longer mileage days.
For intervals on the track, he was obviously there, but for any long off-track repeats, fartleks, tempos, he would ride his bike with us.
I thought this was a good mix. He was present for every bit of our running 3x per week this way when we could maybe use some coaching, but left us alone for the other 4 days per week when we were doing runs at a pace where we could talk.
I would not have liked it if he was along for our easy days and long days, we needed time to talk about parties and hooking up with chicks without feeling like our coach was either going to get angry with us or awkwardly ignore our conversation.
Ultimately we were friendly with our coach, but a coach shouldn't be part of the team, they should be part friend, part mentor to the entire team, both men and women, they shouldn't know about you having a one night stand with one of the girls from the xc team.
