What is interesting is how similar this is to current day Central Asia and the middle east. It is still so tribal. Putin rescuing Russians from their Ukrainian oppressors. Sunni vs. shia. Uzbecks, Georgians etc. Things haven't really changed much geo politically from the dark ages for these places.
