A running friend and I had a pretty fierce debate about this on a long run yesterday. My friend is a very strong believe in "quality over quantity" -- a mantra that I've grown very jaded with over the years. Anyone that would have driven by us would have thought we were having some sort of serious argument lol. My friend tried to inject some fartlek into the run as we raced down a long stretch road (in the middle of a 90 min run). I just stayed back, running at around 5:00/km pace, and watched him run on ahead of me. I could see my brother kneeling down on the side of the road with his camera, catching my friend as he went by. I laughed and kept going. My brother was clearly annoyed and actually threw his camera on the ground (I assume there was no damage). I took off my jacket and literally just plopped down on the couch (typical long run fatigue). But, to me, that's how you get fast -- LONG, slower miles, not beating yourself up in quality miles.
