I'm curious what other people have found is the best way to do this. Obviously I won't take any water or use any private toilets - it's a 5k. Also, it is $50, and I would not enter the race if I weren't to bandit.
The race I'm looking at has about 1500 people and I would finish in the top 15 if I ran it straight up. For that reason, I won't be crossing the finish line.
My motivation is mostly just to do a 5k time trial but preferably with faster runners to push me a little harder than I'd be willing to push myself. It's also a pretty cool course.
Options:
a) Solo a mile and enter the race before the mile mark.
PROS: Don't have to cross the finish line to run a full 5k.
CONS: The timing will be tricky and I likely won't be with people my speed.
b) Start in the starting chute and drop out at ~3mi.
PROS: Logistically easy and I get to run with people my speed the whole way
CONS: Don't get to run a full 5k.
c) Start way back and just run the whole race
PROS: Run a measured 5k course.
CONS: So many people. I might as well just time trial.
d) Start in the starting chute, run as much as I dare, drop out and finish a Garmin 5k.
PROS: The 'obvious' solution. Best of all worlds.
CONS: Don't get to run a full 5k.
e) Just time trial 5k and forget the race
PROS: Easy, ethical.
CONS: Slow.
f) Something else?
