I had an altitude simulator in 1983, the same one that
Salazar had. I use to sit on an exercycle with the tough
gears set, cover up half the intake hole and grind out a
workout at supposedly 10,600. Eventually I ended up in the
hospital.
Does it work? Yes, if you have one that removes oxygen from the intake air.
