Anyone have any ideas of decent vacation spots within 30 min of Portland, Me? Looking for a cabin by a lake type of thing. Is it even possible so close to Portland.
Thanks in advance

I'm not sure about specific spots, you could check lonely planet or somewhere for that, but Portland is a pretty small, compact town/city. With little traffic you can drive from downtown to farmer-town in 10-15 min. Lots of beautiful coastline.
Acadia?
Bar harbor

Hmm...this is something I am wondering, too. My brother and his fiance decided to get married over the 4th of July and my family is looking for a cost effective place to stay. Everything is booked tight and over $200 per night. Apparently, the 4th of July is a tight market in Portland.
North Windham, Raymond, Casco, Naples and other places near Lake Sebago would all be good possibilities. Acadia is like 4 hours away.
If you want a lake, Sebago is a good option for 30 min outside of Portland. Mid-coast, I HIGHLY recommend Camden. Mountains on the ocean, and a typical Downeast Town. Do a google image search of "Mount Battie." Obviously, there is Acadia, but that is at minimum 3 hours north of Portland.
As far as you know are any of these places likely to have small out of the way cabins, or are they more commercial hotel type of areas?
I was hoping to find something on a lake without too many neighbors. Its hard to tell from online searches.
price is right.

You pretty much just described the entire state.

Lots of cabins (or camps, as they're called in Maine) on lakes. North Windham is pretty commercial, but other areas have less activity. My family has a place in Casco on Pleasant Lake which other than one B&B is all cabins. Not sure the best way to find a good rental, but I'm sure there are good ones out there.

I think I might do this. Screw what my family wants to do.
Try a site called "vacation by owner".
Be sure to check eastern NH as well as Maine although you might be pushing your 30 minute limit.

Also, not lakes! HAHAHA, you're 0/2.
It's a bit north of portland, like 90 minutes:

Never been but it looks very nice from the road.
Also, check out Sebago Lake. Never vacationed here either.
Sebego is definitely the closest place to Portland for what you said you are looking for. For something a little smaller and more quiet I would go an hour north to Belgrade Lakes. There are a bunch of great rentals up there and it is very peaceful and beautiful. Parts of Sebago get quite a bit of boat traffic.
