Hi Angelo,
I had both sides done, and the cost was about £3000 per side. I did not have any medical insurance unfortunately so had to pay myself.
I am back to playing football 3 times per week and so far am pain free. Will let you know if I have any relapses. Good luck everyone with your individual cases. -
Ok, I am in Canada, 27 yrs old, play tennis, hockey, soccer, the 3 sports that are the worst for sports hernias lol.
Anyway, hurt my groin/lower right ab area over 8 months ago, tried months or rest, tried therapy, still can't play sports, not getting any better.
Am in Winnipeg and unfortunately not much is known by the local doctors about sports hernia.
Recently have been in contact with Dr. Myers and Dr. Brunt.
It seems Dr. Brunt is a lot less expensive as he takes a different approach to the surgery than Dr. Myers.
I did not yet talk to Dr. Brown in Montreal yet.
3 questions for those who may be able to help:
1. Can an MRI with the proper protocal pick up a sports hernia?
2. Out of the 3 doctors listed, is there one you suggest over the other?
3. Being from Canada (Winnipeg, where no one does the surgery), would health care cover any of it depending if I go to a US doc or one in Montreal?
Thanks, -
Interesting, I developed symptoms of a sports hernia after being diagnosed with bacterial prostatis and taking doxycycline for a month... I later found out that doxycycline can negatively affect tendons and I ran a marathon during this time.... It's been a year.. I seem to be getting better but at a painfully slow rate... I can do everything without pain but run. Just did a 80 mile hike with a 50 pound pack and no pain but Running still aggravates it.. Have'nt raced or trained much in a year.

What are the consequences of continuing activities with this condition? I have been diagnosed with a tear but don't rest it. Can damage be irreversible at any point?
-
destiny tennis,
I remember talking to you many months ago ... that's too bad you're still in pain.
I think you've answered your own question - a tear will not heal without rest and/or surgical intervention. Too, because the groin region is non-vascular it doesn't get direct blood flow so healthy, healing blood cannot get to the affected area.
The worst that can happen is that you'll completely compromise your structure and balance of your muscles by continuing to play tennis with an injury like this. You'll probably wind up feeling pain in other places and could eventually get to a point where walking, sitting and even raking the leaves will be too much pain for you to bear.
Why continue to put yourself through the rigors of pain when you could get it fixed? Why are you not resting?? This seems so obvious, that your body is telling you to rest and yet you aren't...not sure I understand. -
Hi Slugworth,
FYI-Re: Edelman...You should email him. I emailed him 2 years ago inquiring about surgery. He emailed me right back, answered all my quetions, and said his staff would work with me being out of state.
Sounds like his biologic mesh adaptation works well.
I actually just had the laparoscopic/mesh (synthetic) procedure completed 10 days ago with another Dr. closer to wear I live. So far so good!!
Good luck. -
Hi Johnny;
You cannot see Dr. Muldar without Dr. Brown for the SH.
Dr. Muldar just assists Dr. Brown with the surgeries as he is the surgeon for the Montreal Canadians. -
Does anyone have contact info for Dr. Brown?
-
shoelessj- yes i remember talking to you and you offered some great advice. I went through a couple of Dr. visits and eventually ended up at a sports medicicine clinic. He diagnosed me with a grade 2 tear of the rectous abdominous. He made the diagnosis without an MRI so my thought is it is an educated guess on his part. My insurance is decent, not great, so I had to be somewhat selective in what I had them do.

Thank you for the phone number.
Has anyone here from cabada had the surgery with Dr. Brown?
If so how did it go, were you happy with him/the results and would you suggest him?
And in terms of health care, did you get any of it coverered?
What was the total cost for it and was he able to do the diagnosis and surgery in one trip or did you have to go to Montreal twice? -
Hi Doug;
I had to have two surgeries with him and I am still having problems and getting consults with Dr. Meyer and Dr. Mushweck. -
Could I maybe get your email to discuss further.
From what his office told me, he has done over 100 NHL players so if that many have trusted him, perhaps you were just unlucky, I am not sure. But I have to choose someone and am looking for all the info I can get. -
Hi Doug47,
I had the surgery from Dr.Brown last year. I feel great. However I do have minor setbacks every now and then. It's your body and you have to listen to it. Anyway here is more information for Dr.Brown.

Angelo,
Are you back to full action? Were you able to return to your previous activity levels? -
Doug47,
I had surgery with Dr. Brunt 2 months ago, adn I am pretty happy with the results. If you are still considering him and have any questions my email is [email protected]. -
Well.............yes and no. I do feel pain every now and then. Some days I feel great a 10 out of 10 and some days a 5 out of 10 (pain ratio). When cycling I feel pain climbing hills and at a high rpm's. Therefore, to say I'm back the way I was before the injury is no. I'm still working on it.
However, I was told by my doctor to try and seek medical advice from a doctor who specializes in the field of Osteopathy. I'll try that and let you know what happens next.
Best regards,
Angelo -
Hi All-
Thanks to all the people on this discussion board. Great info.
I injured my groin playing tennis couple of months ago. Now I have the same symtoms as most of the people talking about on this message board. I dont have any bulge or lumb around my groin area. I am perfectly alright when I am not running or playing any sports. But when try to run hard, or make any kind of cuts I feel the pain.
I am from Dallas area. Does anybody know a good doctor that knows about sports hernia? I am seeing doctor Dr.Richard Eller (refered by my PCP). He suggested that I probably have a femoral hernia and need surgery. He uses laproscopic technique and the mesh to fix the area. He says the symtoms for sports hernia and femoral hernia are same. And also said MRI is not that helpful, during surgery, when he goes in there, he can look around and find out the where the problem is.
After reading the info on this chain, I am kinda nervous about the surgery, I see lot of people having issues after surgeris.
Any advice would be greatly apprecited.
Thanks-
Koti
