Ah, that was 2010. Unfortunately, for one reason or another, Alan pissed away that opportunity too.

Honestly, in terms of their innate attributes, Webb probably does have more raw ability. He's got better speed and you could make an argument on his aerobic ability.
People neglect the mental/emotional/psychological aspect of 'talent'

That is definitely important. Then the rest is proper coaching, doping, etc.
Kind of sad watching that video.

There's nothing to suggest that this has anything to do with Webb's difficulty returning to form.
Webb ran a 4:02 mile, and then some low 50's 400's.
Without seeing his past and current training, you can't say
what is wrong.
Maybe his next mile will be a 3:55 and he figured it out.
It was reported that at Michigan he wanted to dominate every
workout, and probably hammered himself into the ground at
times.

That's the coaches fault, not Alan Webbs.
.... Says a member of the entitlement generation that feels they have the right for everything to go perfectly and when it doesn't, it must be someone else's fault.

Right, because doping is the only thing that matters, not training, sleep, rest, diet... just drugs.
I wonder if they would say that now if he joined their group for the first time.

Warhurst : " Alan, you're hammering the workouts too hard."
Alan : " I'm out of here "
Why would a coach or anyone say something so dumb? Not the sentiment itself but the fact that there's absolutely no way to debunk or confirm it. You'd think that Salazar would be one guy who would be more interested in results than "talent."
Salazar is an enormously successful coach, but that doesn't mean that people should hang on his every word because his success isn't tied to the almost obligatory gimmickry and random bursts of "huh?"-inducing stuff he produces. He gets surreal talent and manages a lot of it well. None of his runners have benefited from the exotic shit he thinks matters, or pretends to think matters, like how Ritz holds his thumbs. I used to watch him running around as a kid in Massachusetts wearing black knee socks because he thought that was a fine weapon too. It's not necessarily reasonable to invoke the specter of drugs just because it's almost universally accepted that AlSal himself was juiced, but come on -- if Jos Hermens or Merlene Ottey someone else widely believed or known to have doped in their own careers were out there working with the elites in their own countries, how would that fly on this board?
I think that physically Webb is probably the most talented runner the USA has ever seen. But he is a big head case. I heard he used to count every step of every run. I used to be a big head case like Webb. I was doing more mileage and better workouts but running 30-60 seconds slower in the 5k. I got my stuff together and kept the training the same and pr'd by a minute in the 5k and was running 1.5-2 min faster than when I was a head case. You gotta be a well rounded athlete physically, mentally, and emotionally to run well.
Webb seems to be better off emotionally since he's a dad now, physically we don't know since we don't know his training but he is healthy which is big, and mentally he has always had issues so who knows there. Overall, I think he runs 358-359 indoors for the mile. Outdoors I think he runs 339-340 if he does the 1500, maybe like 1330-1340 if he does the 5k.

I'm not sure Alan's college career or attitude at the time is relevant at all given it was more than a decade ago.
Um, better looking and smarter, too.

So true. What is it about rupp that makes everyone just want to punch him in the face?
Webb ran that race on Saturday looking very unconfident and very unsure of himself. I thought he was out of it with 300m to go, but had a good finish. This leads me to believe that he has some better runs coming.

Hopefully. I like Webb and it would be nice to see him run well again.
