Do they really mean "severed" or just twisted/broken? Have to wonder why they called the gym "Crossfit Unbroken". Doesn't really make sense, especially after something like that happens.

It's a terrible thing. I hope he has at least some chance at regaining some lower body function.
How long before a lawsuit is filed? Over under 3 days...
I am highly critical of crossfit, but this could just be a coincidence.
While gyms like Planet Fitness are taking away squat racks and don't approve of deadlifting, CrossFit has done the opposite, they were able to popularize the Olympic lifts.
Pullups, box jumps, squats, deadlifts etc, all very good exercises when performed with the right form.
Unfortunately, at least some CrossFit franchises focus on speed rather than form and that's how they get injured.
Most bodybuilders could benefit from some CrossFit elements in their training (sprints, pullups etc come to mind) to make their body less "show" and more "functional.
He was a crossfit trainer apparently.
Are these the idiots you want training you?
I tried crossfit once, and never again. Also unless you are fat, have a beard or tattos (but not both thats too much) don't try to become a trainer. And I thought there was running or sprinting in crossfit. There is no running, just workouts that 'shake it up' and cause 'muscle confusion' because apparently running/sprinting doesn't do that.
If you want to die of lung cancer, you smoke cigarettes.
If you want to be blown into small pieces in a pointless war, you join the US armed forces.
If you want to die in a motor vehical accident, you don't wear your seatbelt.
If you want to become an orthopedic basket case, you play in the NFL or lift weights "explosively".
I hate to make hay from other's misfortune, but I have developed a cross-training regimen that takes the things that X-Fit gets half-right, eliminated the fratty, mindless BS, and introduced a new, fun and truly healthy approach to sports movement. In a few years, those X-fitters who are still ambulatory will be gimping in my door to discover how the body is really supposed to be used.

He probably had a spinal compression fracture with pulsion of a fragment that caused cord injury.

Fantastic such programs have existed for decades, beginning with the original Nautilus gyms and concept of training. And there are myriad sources of info out there on them, for example:

My program is far more wide-ranging, comprehensive, adaptable, and can be tailored to goals much more than any of these. Basically I am blowing the walls off the "boxes" that others employ to try to contain and market their "unique methods". It reinvents fitness completely, especially in regards to age and social/physical context, yet it's roots are in the fundamentals of how our ancestors survived and how kids universally play.
When I do my sessions, people, especially kids, come up to ask me "How are you able to do that?", then often join in. Not surprisingly, it's how I met my current girlfriend.

Does it involve crabs? I love crabs. They are my favorite animal by far.
This is why I stick with a high catch power snatch.

Seriously, I think XFit's cavalier attitude towards these things will be its downfall. Unless they've brainwashed clients enough not to sue them.
There must be some lawyers chomping at the bit over Xfit's practices. I'm saying this from this incident and the whole rhabdo problem I read about a while back.
Do you sign a liability waiver to join an XFit gym or BOX as they call it?
It's CBS. All they do is spread negative lies about xfit. I bet one of you work there and made this story up.
The XF guy at my office was super flippant about the accident. He saw the video and didn't express any sympathy or concern at all. All he said was "He's done. He's not coming back from that." I was a little freaked out thinking about watching a guy get his spine "severed" like it was just a normal happening.
He did explain exactly why it happened and it does sound like the guy wasn't actually doing XF, but was doing a power lift instead. He said the guy was too far back on the platform and "someone" left some kind of blocks behind the guy that should not have been there.
Ok, so the guy wasn't doing "it" correctly and the environment wasn't safe and XF disciples don't care...and we are to believe that the culture of XF isn't rooted in sociopathic, self-destructive mental illness?
"whoopsie"? A guy is probably paralyzed for life and you make a joke about it? Post real name and address, pvssy, and I'll make sure it gets distributed to the CrossFit community.
Most of you don't know anything about this accident. #1 - the guy that was injured wasn't doing anything "dangerous" and wasn't some noob. He has been competing in Olympic lifting since high school. He correctly bailed from the lift. This is the first incident like this in CrossFit, and it was a fault with the equipment setup. CrossFit is not inherently dangerous. Runners get hit by cars. That doesn't mean no one should run.
What caused the injury was the gym's fault. They set up the bumper plates behind the platform. You never want plates anywhere around where you might bail on the weight, because the bar can hit them and come shooting at you, as it did in this case. I've had that happen to me once when I was careless with my weights and I bailed on a front squat, and it hit the plates and came shooting into my shin and almost broke my leg.
Anyway, I really feel terrible for this guy. I don't know him, but this will change his life forever. For those of you making light of it, or joking about it, like I said, please post your real name and address and I'll make sure your comments get distributed to the CrossFit community. Pvssies.
