Is it possible for me to achieve a 16:30 5K? This cross country season I went from a 20:12 to a 18 flat. I took off a year before this. So if I train hard this off season and do track could it be possible to take 1:30 off my time? If you believe it's possible or not please give me training tips! Thanks! Other info for you... I'm a junior in high school that 5'2 and I'm hitting a growth spurt at the moment!
I'll be blunt...I think you're being too optimistic. Aim for a more realistic goal, like 17:30 or 17:00. As you go below 18 time gets harder and harder to drop...not just cuz of talent (some people cant go faster than 18 or 17min for a 5k) but also more mileage is needed. If you got to 18min 5k by doing 30mpw, you'll most likely need to do 10 or 20 more mpw to get to 17 min 5k, and lower.
But I'm not saying that you wont be able to achieve such a great time, Im saying that you might be aiming too high for such a short period of time....all that will bring is disappointment.
I'll provide an example...one of the varsity members on my XC team, started the year out with a 17:08, and finished the season 2 weeks ago at a 16:30. A 38 second drop over a 2 month period, and that was with a lot of summer base training (30 mpw+).
