Hi, I am a high school student who has ran XC for 2 years and track for 1 year, and starting my 2nd track season.
Recently, after a few fast intervals, I get a metallic taste in my mouth, which kind of tastes like blood. My spit also gets pretty thick and pretty much I'm unable to finish the workout. At first I thought it was just some lactic acid since I first felt it after taking a week off from the end of cross country.
But it has been persisting. It's been like 2-3 weeks since the first time it happened. Pretty much after a hard interval of 800-1600 meters I will get this feeling. After the 2nd or third one its unbearable, and i can't run anymore.
I went to see the trainer at my school and he said that he didn't know other than that it sounded like lactic acid. I'm thinking about seeing a doctor about this.
More information about the condition: I don't feel it at all during the day, only after a tough track interval. It has also happened at various temperatures. At first it was all in the cold (under 50 degree weather) but today the workout was in 60-65 degree weather; it was pretty mild and it still happened.
Any tips on what I can do to alleviate this? This has never happened to me before in the past 3 seasons I have run in and its seriously hurting my performance from the beginning.
