I think that is BRILLIANT!....hope they run that commercial during the NYM...trying to explain to non-runners how fast these guys are running is difficult to do verbally. This demonstrates it in an understandable and entertaining way.
Hats off to Asics...
PS..the only thing better would be to have recognizable athletes from other sports trying to do the same..
Love to see, Lebron, RG III, Messi, etc...never happen, but how cool would that be.[/quote
They would look fine. All of these guys have plenty of speed to be relaxed running 4:40 pace.
Maybe they picked the worst, but man these people were losing it quickly. I'd think most people would have enough basic speed to handle 4:40 pace...but these guys looked to be falling off in a matter of seconds.
Now if you mean seeing how long they would last...different story.
If you started a treadmill at that pace, Usain Bolt would fall off.
If you start the treadmill at zero then work it up to that pace, most people, including pro athletes, will be spent and slowing down by the time it gets there.

In the airport commercial, Ryan says "Virtual Ryan" is faster so maybe they don't have everything calibrated exactly.
Not an airport.
NYC subway system.

I am sure he should go paleo to in order to run sub-2:05.
I noticed Ryan mentioned a little while ago he had eliminated gluten from is diet. This is probably the most significant element common to most paleo-style diets.

I would like to see Ryan Hall on a treadmill running Usain Bolts pace and see what happens? He'll be smashed against the wall.
Or see Ryan Hall try to attempt lift Fronings weights. He will probably break a few bones while trying that.
Speaking of...
Sometimes when I am at the gym I will see cross fit guys doing their HIGH INTENSITY sprints on the treadmill... at my tempo pace.
It is fun to watch them hammer for 30 seconds while running relaxed at the same pace for 40 minutes on the next treadmill over. :)
How relaxed are you? Would you say somewhat relaxed? Very relaxed?

Nothing he said indicated that he was on a high horse. You may understand what 5 minute pace is, but lots of other people don't. No one is sticking their nose up anyone.
Ditto. Two specific answers to the "Why would you think...? question: The VAST majority of casual runners never run anywhere near 5 minute pace and have no idea how fast it is. Why and how would they? Are they checking to see how their short repeats (if they even do intervals) compare to 5 minute pace? Of course not. And second, even those formerly-competitive runners (and fans of the sport, like me) who were far too untalented to race at 5 minutes - but had some idea how fast it was - can, over the years, lose touch with just how fast 5 minutes is. In fact, since I rarely run timed over measured distances, I often (depressingly) wonder what the pace is of my 30 or 60 second "fast feeling" intervals? ...I probably don't want to know!

+1 more .. same thing with the stupid comment about marathoners running against Usain .. the point is not whether Mutai can keep up with Usain .. or Usain with Mutai over 26 miles .. the point is that the average folks who go for a run, and stay reasonably well in shape, have no idea whatsoever how fast these guys are running for 26 miles .... I would be surprised if more than 1 or 2 out of 10 folks 'off the street' realize how quickly they'd be dropped at that pace; very few would hang more than 200-250m.
