I got recognized from "local road races" and "local papers when you were in high school" at a meeting for work the other day. I graduated high school 6 years ago, rarely run road races, and barely broke 15 on the track.
It is by no means unreasonable to expect to be recognized. This is a good goal.

You realize that Olympic silver medalist Galan Rupp can almost walk in any american city and not get recognized.
Good luck with that.

-Run a marathon while whizzing in a bucket.
-Ride in a bucket over Niagra Falls.
-Never have a bucket with a hole in it.
Qualify for the Old Farts Olympics-World Masters Games.
I realize getting recognized is a tough one. I live in CA and go to Payton Jordan and Mt. SAC every year. In the days leading up to the race, pros are always getting stopped in hotels and restaurants, albeit by other runners. While it's not quite the experience Lebron might get, I'd take it.
And most of them are super nice and surprised to sign an autograph. I'd encourage anyone who sees a pro to call them out for a handshake. You know you'd want the same treatment yourself.
I married a runner, best training decision I've ever made. You can't ever skip a run or eat junk food without catching flak for it. Which makes me think of another thread: Fastest married couple you know?
