You didn't mention how slow he was going before. No, that's not max VO2, it's probably not even acid threshold. He's just cruising. I wouldn't think of them as training for him.
What I mean about pace is that the body adapts to how it is trained. If you train at a particular pace, your gains will be optimized for running at that pace and less effective the farther you are from it. So the fastest practical pace is best at any training distance.
I don't know who, but Joe Vigil quoted someone as saying "if you train slow, you will surely race slow."
To me it seems like he starts slower than treshold pace, and ends up faster.
It surely are training for him, and more than that. It have to be quite hard. As he regularly talks about how tired he is after all the hard training, but doesn't really seem to have trained that much. Workouts twice a day? Sure, he can do 6 miles and then a 4mile run. Hard? Thats not hard. So these intervals got to take a lot ouf of him. But reading his log, you realise he has tremendous talent. I would thought he trained much more before I bought it.
Sounds like the good old Seb Coe quote: "long slow distane produce long slow runners" or whatever the exact quote was.
