I've read his training diary from 2012 and have a few questions I hope someone know the answer too:
Question nr.1:
Regularly every week he have a day with long intervals, a total of 8-10km (5-6mi), but instead of having 60s rest he often have 90s or 2minutes.
Example:
Tue, Nov 1: 8x1000m with 90s recoveries
Tue, Nov 22: 5x1 mile with 2min recoveries
Tue, Nov 29: 2x(1K, 1mi, 1K) 90s between reps and 2 min between sets.
Personally the group I used to train with (now alone) always did 60s, or sometimes 45s. I'm a pure 800m runner and therefore is quite curious to the advantage of more rest, would that be better for an 800m runner because of the higher speed you are able to hold on the intervals?
Question nr.2:
I don't have a coach and have to make my own program this year after a few years with non-successfull coaching.
While looking at Symmonds training it doesn't seem so straightforward, theres A LOT of different interval-sessions (although they are training the same system, they are often different from the one last week or the one before that, rarely does he do the same workout many times).
How does one know what different workouts to do? Is it really that much better to keep changing the workouts from week to week?
As in: Instead of doing 8x1000m regularly on Tuesdays, you should do that, but then 5x1mile like above and similar?
Question nr.3:
He does seem to do very little speed, at least until January, is this normal?
Sorry about all the questions...
