Nobody's ever going to remember you.
But I know lots of people who'll remember Jon Olsen.. and Sage Canaday. And it's not fleeting. This past weekend a race was held in honor of Ted Corbitt. his prime was in the 1950s.
You guys are so talented, and it'd be so easy for you to break this record. It's puzzling that you'd turn down the admiration of lots of people, plus the financial incentives offered in this thread.
Heck, you don't even have to set the record. Ted Corbitt's race was 24 hours long, and the winner ran 116 miles. You could easily have won that. I'm sure you can push 175 miles in a 24 hour race, if not 200. Then you can spit on the champion's trophy as meaningless. That'd really be a dagger in the side of the ultrarunners you seem to hate so much.
Newflash...no ones going to remember Sage or Jon either. Or YOU. Before this I couldn't tell you who Jon Olsen was. Ask any person with a life and they will say they don't know either.
Only ultra d's who hav nothing going on in their lifes and anre weird intrapersonally follows these guys. (and it's really sad)
I'm convinced Ultra people have some sort of personality disorder. That's what draws them together so they can worship average runners.

Dunno, why don't you ask him? Maybe the "truth" is because he was like you and didn't have the balls to try when he was 29.
Probably not though. As early as age 30 he was already running ultras, quite successfully.
http://ultrasignup.com/results_participant.aspx?fname=Jon&lname=OlsenAs a talentless hack who'll never have success at any distance I have to be OK with nobody knowing me. But I'll bet more people know who Scott Jurek is than whoever the US sent to the Olympics in the Steeplechase in 2012, much less 2004 (when Jurek was in his prime.)
I actually agree with that. But I agree with that for any sport. Ever step back to observe the average NFL fan? Wow.
Can't tell you if it counts as a personality disorder, but it has been shown that we do have a high pain tolerance.
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23368760Yeah, he's so good he has a 95.7% on Ultrasignup.com, while I have a 98.9% ranking in 15 races, just none on the track, all on the road/trail/mountain. You have no idea about your audience.

Exactly my point! If you're so good you should go for the record. All that notoriety and admiration could be yours. Just think, you too could be the topic of a letsrun flamewar!
Plus I think we could come up with some financial incentive just to watch the spectacle..
You should go for it, stevet!!! Put your money where your mouth is!

Who cares? 7:12/mile is barely jogging. Anyone on my D3 team could easily destroy this record if you gave them a few weeks to prepare for it. Only reason we don't is because it's a waste of time. Who wants to waste half a day and risk injury to get some meaningless record that anyone who wanted could take. 7:12/mile pretty damn slow.
Next up we'll be going for 50 miles running backwards record...
Yes, 7:12 is slow but can you run 7:12 miles at 80% EFFORT for 100 miles? Lots of people can run a 7:12 mile at 90 or 100% EFFORT but to keep that up for 100 miles means you will have to dial back your effort to 80% and so you will slow down. The trick is to keep your pace UP to 7:12 miles yet keep your effort DOWN around 80%. May not be easy to do.

I already said that I have no talent and won't be successful at any distance. But I am a fan and would love to see more Americans go under 12 hours. Perhaps we can even take the world record which is in the neighborhood of 11:30!
Since you're obviously capable, it'd be great if you came out and gave it a try. For America. It's your patriotic duty.

Ultrarunners are basically p@ssymen. They lack high levels of testasterone.
When I first read this thread I thought what an amazing achievement and great race report. It inspired me and I thought I wish I could do that! or maybe I could. That's whats great about athletics It inspires you to try and do something positive.
Why would you want to do that ? why would you want to run 14 or 15 or 20 minutes for 5km.
Why sprint 100m and call your self fastest man on planet BOLT when people are faster over 50 and 60m
Why be a troll.
Why be so unhappy as to have anything negative to say about what this athlete done in his spare time just for the hell of it and enjoyment.
I really want to achieve a good 100mile time as my Pb is only just over 17 hours but just now Im racing 5km because Im now fit to consider something as athletic as a 100mile run.
That is Im not fit enought to consider something as athletic as a 100mile run

I'm more of a dog man myself, but yes many ultrarunners own cats and love them.
And since "we" are comprised of both men and women, our average testosterone level is indeed most likely lower than your individual level.
"I" will put my money where my mouth is, and offer a Ben to anyone on this thread who goes out and takes the record from Olsen. And if you do it at Desert Solstice, they reward you with six more Bens for breaking 12 hours! (20 Bens for 11:30..)
Seven Bens buys a lot of top ramen, you know.
i honestly and sincerely want to set up entry and purse for one of you tools to have a run at the record. or just a run at a 100. but i don't want one of the slow-pokes... show me your track credentials, road credentials, whatever it is that you think makes you capable of running this kind of time/distance and i'll get the funds and a group of folks together to back it. i'll pick the very best of those who submit their credentials so your lot are putting your best foot forward.

Ooh, a testable hypothesis. Excellent. Now prove it.

No individual who has denigrated Olsen's North American 100 record has the ability to break that record.
As a corollary to that statement, no individual capable of breaking that record would never denigrate Olsen's achievement.

They have no credentials. In anything. As runners and as people these are envious little losers who probably couldn't beat a good high school girl runner, or grandmaster lady runner. The one guy talking about his DIII team probably was never on a team. All of the good runners I have ever known were cool guys (and gals) that supported and encouraged other runners and were good sports when they lost. These are malicious little trolls who need to grow up and better themselves. I won't revisit this.
Or we are true competitors that are tired of mediocrity taking over our sport. Ultra running is mediocrity. Ever wonder why it doesn't attract the best, but only older white guys, who couldn't hack it in the real world of racing.
Scott J, Sage, Anton, Dean K. None of the guys could even sniff an olympic team. so instead of challenging themselves to get better, they take on weak competition in a niche sport.
I know! Isn't it amazing?! Everyone is so mediocre and you're so incredible that you can come in, sweep it all up, get yourself some real cold hard cash prize money. And I can't believe I didn't mention - when you win all those races and earn all that money, they'll be jumping over each other to sponsor you - you can choose your sponsorships! That means even more cash, free race entries, and FREE SHOES dude! (Everyone loves free shoes..)
These other ultra-running guys who came here disparaging you - they have no faith.
But I believe you.
And I believe in you man..
I know you can do it.
And while you're at it, come take that world record back.. for America!! We've all failed but you say you can do it and I believe you. Please. I'm begging you, America has such amazing talent in guys like you and that record belongs to some communist. (He's from Russia, so I assume he's a no good dirty communist.)
Victory over communism!! Plus free shoes.
stevet, thank you for making all of us feel valid in our stances. While you can win $500 running 100 miles on a non-certified track, the top talents in the sport are pursuing the $100,000+ prizes at the Olympic level distance of the Marathon (NYC, Chicago, London, Berlin).
You want to know how good Olsen is? Have him enter TNF 50M in San Francisco. Then we'll see how good of an ultra runner he is, or perhaps he can whine his way into Western States. Better yet, he should like up at Rocky Raccoon and see what he can run on land and not a short track.
You think this 11:59 will last a lifetime? You are mistaken. It's not even the WR. It's an AR that has been attempted by not even 1000 individuals in the history of the sport.
Keep your shoes and small cash while the rest of us aim for the stars.
