I had a hip replacement 4 years ago and have been on again off again exerciser Currently I am Nordic walking 5-7 miles every other day and road biking 18-20 miles on the other nite. I use to run a lot before the surgery but have done very little since. My question is it safe to do the Nordic walking?
My thought is walking with the poles will help extend the life of my replacement I really enjoy the walking but do not know if I am hastening my hips demise. It feels fine and I do not have any pain. The poles seem to take some of the pressure off my back and knees also. I walk about 3.5 to 4 mph. That is about as fast as I can go. Never could walk fast was always a much better runner(4:31 mile) not world class but I use to be able to win a few local 5 and 10 k's. I know those days are behind me but I get bored with just the bike and I am almost 40 miles from the closest gym. I do some weight lifting at home also. Are heavy weights dangerous to a hip replacement?
Thanks!
