Fresh off a silver medal, what do you think Nick will earn annually in the years 2013-2016 on average?
My guess is upwards of $750,000-1,000,000 because he also is the franchise owner of 10 tanning salons.

Let's just say it's a solid $1M.
From a track stand point, I would make a bet that his nike contract is within 100k of 450k. So 1M might be accurate taking everything into consideration.
On a side note, Nick does know how to market himself well. I hope other athletes notice what he is pushing for and make track like other sports that receive multiple sponsorship. Unlike most posters on this site, I think track has a chance to be very popular but only if it comes from the top down.
Maybe letsrun should jump on the band wagon supporting new bylaws instead of reporting how track is not popular. Do something about it.
Job well done Nick, I'm a big fan!
lmao
tanning salons don't make sh1t
he probably gets a couple hundred from Nike + running meets. He'll definitely get more after this year because he likely got some nice bonus money from getting a silver @ worlds (pretty standard).
Probably a solid $500k or so this year. He probably has had a few where he is scraping by as well. The dude works his butt off and will be fine regardless of running, but he isn't banking $1mm a year.
Agreed. Having actually seen recent contracts and earnings for successful and well known Nike track/marathon runners who aren't even at 1 million it's extremely doubtful he is getting anywhere close to that. Although, I don't know about the tanning business....
I'd put him at 400-500k, in my opinion. Having seen a few of these types of threads in the past I'm always amazed at what some people think these guys make. This is running after all, fringe sport at best.

Nah, not really. He's outspoken, but does he really know how to "market himself"? This is showing he has 3 "sponsors", or more like 1 (Nike):
http://nicksymmonds.com/sponsors/I would look towards Meb, Ryan Hall, Josh Cox, ultra runners, triathletes, and other sports who know how to juggle multiple sponsorships.
i like his self promotion, he's made himself visible. some athletes get cut after a silver medal (manzano), but symmonds's marketability will go up because he's always putting himself in a public eye. plus he tries to appeal to the common person. in one article before WCs he talked about he wanted to win a medal because (paraphrasing) "the beer will taste sweeter and the fishing will be more relaxing". at least in oregon a lot of folks drink beer and flyfish, so there's an instant connection. he's done well to protect himself. if one of his sponsors tried to cut his endorsement, it would be all over the running media and that sponsor would lose face.
bottom line is he's a lot smarter than we give him credit for.
i'm happy to see runners making money, but i can't understand at all why toyota and vizio think they gain anything by sponsoring ryan hall

Is that really true? Tanning Salons?? So he is all Mr Gay Rights (which is fine) but he is selling UV exposure?

What does UV exposure have to do with gay rights?

Anton Krupicka has a lot of sponsors. No clue how much he makes, but he lives in his truck a lot of the year so I assume his overhead is teeny tiny. Dude can market himself pretty well. Ultra runners seem to have a better handle on this than traditional track and road racers. Dial it in, look at skateboarding, it is about merchandise and personality not consistent performance.

I would take a gander that is over 700k for a couple of reasons. His Nike contract is most likely between 150-250k without bonuses for worlds teams, medals, appearances. I've heard many time that a medal contender doubles their salary in "extras". Now we're looking at 400k on the low the number. Lets say in his 10 franchises, he makes 40k at each. That's another 400k. (40k is not that much for a franchise owner).
He also does other small things like selling training logs, hanson dodge, signed apparel. My honest guess would be 650-800K in a comfortable year, and only rising after silver.
If track was like any other sport, Nick would be worth 25 million.
Think about all the sponsors he could get.
Gatorade
Powerade
Subway
Nike
Ford
Fishing & Camping equipment
Power Bar
GNC
Beauty products
The list is endless and could take track to the next level. Would love to see more people fighting for multiple sponsorships!!!!!!
And how do you suggest the governing bodies change what policies they have in place?
Obviously USATF is already struggling to grasp basic concepts of a governing body.
Although I'm no tanning expert, I feel quite confident in writing that those who tan *choose* to do so.

Are you suggesting that straight people go to tanning salons, you heterophobic bstard!
What do distance runners make, say those that are up and coming but signed by Nike? I imagine there's a good range from those guys to a guy like Mo (not up and coming) who has some medals around his neck.
Nothing. At all.
Its just that making a living selling UV exposure is inconsistent, imo, with a socially responsible stance on (for instance) gay rights.
Maybe there are recent advances that have made tanning safe? Am I missing something here?

knows how to market himself? name one person who doesn't follow track who knows who he is. then compare that answer to how many non-track people know who lolo jones is. now that's someone who knows how to market herself.

The range is really wide and from year to year it swings quite a bit even in your prime. Not all that consistant and the high times don't last all that long.
From my experience. Total income (all sponsors, earnings, USTAF money, etc.) ranged from high 300k to low 700k.
For people on the way up or on the way down seemed to always fall in the 100k area.
Obviously we know that there are plenty of people well below that and others (Mo) who are probably way above what I mentioned.
