For the Irish: Nolan to Kiernan, "Jerry, you're a fool"

Jerry said that he was lazy, that he just didn't train hard enough. He said he watched a training session, and didn't think Nolan was serious at all.

I think he also implied that Nolan wasn't tough enough mentally.

James is a prodigous talent and could still 'make it' if things turn out his way. He should be irish record holder by now but seems stuck in the 3'35-3'38 range, making little or no progress.

I cant defend his decision to coach himself though, thats just plain silly. In an event with so many facets as the 1500m every athlete neeeds guidance. He should eat humble pie and try to get turnbulls coach or Jim Kilty to guide him.

He was coached for a few years by noel caroll (RIP) and then by brendan hackett (why i dont know).

any self coached athlete will have problems with discipline given that they would listen to only one person-themselves. This leads to problems if the athlete is not motivated ennough. Turnbulls coach is a legend, James should look to hook up with Gareth, although im not sure if they are best of friends.

There is no reason it has to be an Irish coach. Noel Carroll was a great coach, look what he did with David Mathnews, Sean Kyle would be another 800m coach of equal calibre, has also caoched Elaine Fitzgerald over 1500m. I don't know what sort of coach would suit him, he did run 3.35 self coached. He does need a shoulder to lean on, may be a coach he can talk things over with. One coach he shouldn't get is Jerry Kiernan, there have been a number of athletes that ran better after leaving him, Maria McCambridge was the latest example. I thought Jerry had turned over a new leaf but it didn't take long for him to revert to his old ways of trying to put everyone down.

Does Gareth want anyone better than himself in that group?

I heard he had an athlete dropped from the group who was threatening his no1 spot.

I wouldnt be too hard on JK - he was employed to give his opinion and thats what he gave, and there are grains of truth in it. Shame it wasnt in a more constructive manner. also, Maria is runnig well but JK took charge when she was at an all time low. He had a lot to do with her return. And Connolly became euro u23 cham last yr - no mean feat. Name one athlete who did better after leaving him (other than MMcC)?

His "group" I dont believe he has one. I know he had been doing a bit with carroll, but as far as im aware his group consist of gareth, himself and him.

what about sweeney, murray, macclean?

1. The value of my post was to point out that the comments made by eldoret, wannabekila and ?? were incorrect.

2. Thank you for bringing me up to speed/getting me with the programme, for without your recent post i would never ever have realised that topics on a thread evolve, (duh!). That said, i am still correct to invite people to stay on the original topic when the distraction from the main thread adds nothing of value, as in this case.

3. Sure i know the answer to your question but, strangely enough given your aggressive and sarcastic tone, i don't really feel disposed to give you the information.
