How about Kastor? BRONZE medal and ran like a champ. What a race! I was so happy and so proud to see her run such an incredible race representing the USA. It truly was an emotional finish. Wow!
GREAT JOB DEENA!

GREAT JOB DEENA!
yeah, the best scene of the marathon was when Kastor passed Alemu and then they zoomed on her face and she started to smile a mile away from the finish.
I can still remember the first time I'd heard of Deena. It was in the fall of '87. She was a freshman at Agoura HS, and she finished 2nd in the Mt. SAC sweepstakes race in at time (if I remember correctly) of 17:27. I was watching that race, consentrating on the girl who won (Kira Jorgensen of Rancho Buena Vista which was one of our arch rivals in League, who was also a Kinney National Champion) and marveling on this freshman girl finish shortly behind her. It's great to see someone work so hard for so long seeing her dreams come true. I couldn't be happier for her!
That was a special moment. What a great race.
I haven't been this proud of any runner in quite some time. Deena has always been one of my idols. She is a testimate to everyone that the American dream is true. "You can be anything that you want to be". She decided that she was going to become the best runner in the world. She didn't sit around dicussing training theories, or wether training in flats was the best way to go. She woke up every morning and ran, and ran, and ran. She never stopped believing that she could be great, and today she proved to everyone that she is. She is everything that is right with American running....She is everything that is right with running period.
DEE-NA! DEE-NA! DEE-NA!
I wanted a post race marathon show all about Deena, but sadly all I got was beach volley ball. Truly an amazing accomplishment. I remember her too back in the day, at the CIF meet and Kinney, she has always been a stud.
They should put her race in a box and label it "how to run a marathon" by Deena Kastor.
Deena ran off da hook!
I cheered for an American marathoner today! A bronze medal in the Olympic marathon.
I happened to catch the final minutes while working on my gold medal body at the gym.
What a class act reaction. She was sincerely touched to win the Bronze. Makes Mr. Chest want to fly to Athens and reward her properly. Something none of you little piss ants are capable of doing.
ha ha hahahahaha.
Even Mr. Chest teared up?! Way to go DEENA!
DEENA SHOULD GET A TICKER TAPE PARADE!!!
I almost cried too. She was the highlight of the Olympics for me.
Great job, Deena!
was there any money for the bronze? wasn't Chicago and New York giving out a million bucks to any American who got gold? was it all or nothing? what were the details of that?
hopefully she'll recover to in time to win New York.
That bonus only applied to gold medals. But don't worry, she'll make plenty of money
I have to admit that I shed a few tears watching her come down the final stretch. Because she has never been the most talented runner, or the most graceful, or won that many titles for that matter. But you just know that she has been working her butt off for years and years and it finally really paid off in a big way. For her to win an Olympic medal against that field which, I know it is a cliche, but had to have been one of the deepest in history, was the highlight of the Olympics for me. This Tecate's for you Deena.
wow. 16 posts about an american distance runner, and not one of them negative. shows what an impressive performance that really was!
way to go Deena. I must admit i did not cry as she came to the finish. The wind blew a little piece of dirt into my living room and directly into my eye. damnedest thing...
dick
Pathetic performance. I was embarrassed when she cried like a baby. Gold was the only option. Bad day in sport.
MA, you are mean. Like, I appreciate it, but still mean.
I was fighting back the tears also.
Maybe this goes without saying - since it has not been said on this thread - but everything else aside, she ran an absolutlely brilliant race. This was a textbook lesson for all of the novices - and all the rest who inevitable go out too fast - on how to race distances! GREAT JOB DEENA
