how much faster (mph) can you ride with a better bike. I have a old, used road bike that I got from an antique store, but she rides just fine. So how much faster could I go if I got a new road bike for somewhere around $1000?

1mph maybe if you are using the same tires on both and are seated in the same position. more than likely the tires on the new bike will be much nicer, though, and you will be in a more powerful position and just feel faster, which encourages you to push harder. so maybe 2-3 mph.
For a 1000 dollar bike... maybe 3-4% faster. If you want to ride faster for a race, learn to ride in the down position and mess around with your gears on the road to learn which you perform best with on different inclines. That and just getting consistent rides in will improve your speed vastly more than a new bike will. Either way, I would recommend you get a used but high-end bike. $1000 doesn't buy a lot of quality in a new bike, and you could probably pick up a 3 year old bike of superior quality for half the price on craiglist or ebay or something.
You'd likely go a bit faster. Not to be rude, but why are you interested in going faster?
