ok, i've tended to think the pollen talk is just excuses, and the mask is hilarious, but when rupp and farah were commentating, rupp said something about how salazar looks it up on "pollen.com or whatever". I thought it was a joke.
I just checked pollen.com, and the most intense pollen over the entire US is indeed centered on the coast of Oregon. I couldn't believe it.
As much as I hate to see an Olympic silver medalist('s coach) making excuses like that, maybe there is something to it.
According to allergy.com, Eugene currently has the highest pollen count in the nation.
They should take a page out of Chris Bosh's book or D. Wade or Spoelstra. One is playing with a bad ankle and theother is playing with a bad knee, and they are both doing squat against Indiana so far. Each time a reporter brings it up, those guys downplay it or refuse to use it as an excuse for their lousy performances. It's obvious to all that are watching that its affecting their performances, but you don't hear Spoelstra or his players talking about their ailmetns at press conferences. Maybe those guys are just tougher than distance runners though.

2) Nobody should ever be leaking these excuses. It doesn't matter if they are legit or not. It is simply lame to be throwing out excuses.

I'm not a fan of excuses but for someone who suffers from allergies like myself, it can make you feel awful whether you accept it or not! Allergies cause respiratory complications as well as illness. Not something that helps when you are trying to run as fast as you can.

So if no one is talking about their injuries then how did you know about them? Well placed leaks or top notch investigative journalism? In any event, you idiots need to quit comparing running a 5k to a team sport. If D Wade or Bosh played the whole game, jogged in place during the timeouts and breaks at the quarters/halves then maybe they'd have a claim at approaching the toughness required to run distance.
If Rupp was indeed suffering from allergies and still ran 6th in 13:08, it's probably safe to say he would have won easily on a normal day. After all, Farah ran 13:05 sick.

2). Wrong, the reason it is a legit topic in Eugene is because one of the local industries in the Willamette Valley is growing grass to produced Grass Seed. What that means is that almost everyone knows someone who is an extreme sufferer of allergies to those grass seed grass pollens. It's like the fog in San Francisco in the summer time - it is a local topic. In the case of Rupp, even before the breathing mask experiment, it was public record that he had bad allergy problems and got regular allergy shots while living in Eugene.
What really shouldn't be happening is so many low minded, negative people devoid of understanding or compassion for allergy sufferers. If you are one, or have one in your family -- you get it. It is miserable for those people.

What causes a bad race randomly? There are generally REASONS, which are legit excuses as to why someone has an off race. Maybe it's allergies, maybe it's being sick, maybe it's tweaking a muscle, not sleeping well, some bad food, or maybe it's a bad spell of training, the athlete being mentally distracted due to personal issues, or a million other REASONS. There's no such thing as a bad race without a reason.

That's quite a rant. Nobody is saying there aren't excuses for a bad race. They're criticizing the fact that Al Sal had to complain to the media about it. Everybody has bad races for different reasons, but they don't go around complaining to the press about it. Lea Wallace's dad died during the olympic trials last year. You didn't see her complaining to the media that it was why she didn't make it to the Olympic final. In fact, most people didn't find out until months after when she was interviewed for a WOW.

Galen didn't say sh*t as far as I can understand, other than he was disappointed. Salazar is pointing out the pollen as a factor, and, from reading several posts on here, it sounds like a very legitimate problem. So, the question is, why did Galen run, because he looked about as bad as I've ever seen him and still ran 13:08 on a hot, windy day when the chase pack didn't go with the pacesetters?
As for the football/basketball analogy, that really is pathetic. Frankly, basketball and football players are coddled better than anyone and they are just like decathletes. They can't handle the pain of long distance running and whine about it. Decathletes hate running the 1,500.
The whole talk of folks like Bosh and Wade not talking about being hurt is silly.
For one, everyone knows they are hurt, Bosh left for the locker room in the middle of a game (few games back). So yeah, no need to mention it as the commentators constantly talk about it.
Second. They have teammates that can step it up and cover a bit for them when they are off 5-10%. In track you are all out there alone so it can be pretty obvious when something is up.
And why the bashing on Rupp, he isn't the one making excuses.
I gets reamed when he pulls out of a race for whatever reason, and gets reamed when he races and isn't quite on that day.
On the bright side he seemed off, and had a bad day and still ran 13:08 and was in the mix with a top field.
He may not of won the race or PR'd but he still had a decent race. It's not like he blew up and ran 13:20!
How much better did you expect him to run, he was coming down from altitude and USA's is when the real racing begins.
Pollen or no pollen, if this is Rupp's bad day, I'll take it.

Wrong. Making excuses remains lame, regardless of your dear little hero-worshipping, oh let's not criticize anyone cuteness.
Some days you have it, some days you don't. Whether it is allergies, fatigue, illness...whatever - what's the difference? Run, compete, accept the result and move on - no excuses.
