So this freshman kid on my team is going to have a kid... he's pretty good for a freshman and has run around 29:40 and 14:30 this year. Any thoughts as to how this will affect his running career?

Damn, no condoms at your school? Do you live in Pakistan? He'll probably stop running competitively in a few months and instead focus on the marathon on a track.
Wow what an idiot
Tell him to make his SO get an abortion. It would be better for everyone.
He better become a world class marathoner or track ain't paying for dat baby.
Your training runs as a team are going to change quite a bit, he is going to be buying one of these.

Serious response; He needs to forget about running for a while and think about how he can help his child.
He should really be talking to the girl and discussing their options. Are they both in college? Maybe they could give the baby up for adoption if they don't want an abortion. It'd be a better life for all 3 of them. The baby would go to caring, responsible parents while the 2 kids don't get their lives turned upside down before they are prepared.
If he is a freshman that means he is at least 18, right? If he is 18 he is an adult and should be prepared to have a baby. He can no longer worry about track. He needs to get a job so that he can support the kid while he finishes school.
He doesn't need to murder the baby so that he can keep running 10ks for fun. Get your heads out of your asses.
Obvious troll.

Yes, I am the troll but the folks advising him to kill the baby are quite believable. What a great society we have become! An 18 year old who is old enough to get filled with lead for his country cannot manage to raise a child?
Let's keep deferring responsibility. That makes a great deal of sense.

^^God this made me laugh out loud!
if this is right, how do people on here figure these things out so fast??
Happened to me...my boyfriend and I got married, had the baby, continued to do track, and graduated. We are about to have our 12 year anniversary, have had another child, and are happy and reasonably successful (good jobs, advanced degrees)
I think both of our college track careers suffered, mine more than his. He won conference multiple times, went to regionals, but most likely could have done better had he been able to live the life of a self-absorbed college athlete.
It was not the best situation but we have some great memories from that time and came out fairly unscathed. Pretty sure we're the exception, not the rule though, we happened to have the right circumstances and it worked out...if I had a daughter or son I'd advise them to consider other options.
This kid is ridiculously underperforming in the 5K. He should focus on getting his time at least below 14:15. Then, maybe his child.
This shit happens in college. Tell him to get motivated and stay focused. He will be fine.

You're the absolute worst. "Troll" doesn't mean whatever you want it to mean. In your case, you're just using it to label someone you don't agree with. The ONLY way this guy could be a "troll" is if he wrote that stuff simply to incite inflammatory discussion for his own amusement. That isn't the case.
So quit using "troll" haphazardly, you dimwit. You're the reason the word has lost much of its meaning.
his life is over. unless the baby has a different ethnicity, then he is in the clear.
DAT BABY DON'T LOOK LIKE ME!
If they have family (parents, extended) who are willing to be involved, it can be a very manageable situation. College and running are not that time intensive compared to working a real job. If they get good jobs when they get out of college, everything will be fine.
