He hasn't done anything of note in years. At this point OTC it's better off getting rid of him and bringing in Bobby Curtis.

Why would he quit? He's making money song what he enjoys. If he quit he'd be an idiot
Can't believe no one's asked this yet...
How was his leg speed velocity?
I'd say Webb is also/still one of the most valuable distance runners in terms of marketing. With his 3:53, he is a legend. People will be interested in having him come to expos, races, talks... for a very long time.
He's the McEnroe of track (minus all of the wins/championships).
1337!! omg w3bbz 1337 4941|\|!!

Flotrack showed him on the starting line next to Solinsky and Huling. Super nervous, making weird faces... He was talking to Solinsky saying "let's go." Solinsky was ignoring him. Webb could've distracted him. What an idiot. Just relax and run what you're capable of.
You actually paid $20 to watch the race??
I understand why you posted under "asdfadf" and want to remain anonymous.
I believe you meant to say "Webb is IN THE back, baby"

So he's not the McEnroe of track. Idiot.

It's a nice start to his season...lot's of season left.
For the ones in front of him as well
It's a nice season opener. He won't be running 13:10 this year...but it would be interesting if he run something in the range of 13:15/13:18, which is not out of the cuestion seeing his splits.
he ran this time in a turkey trot beating rupp several years ago, when he was with salazar, but this is a good time to open up in for him. However, he's a miler and should run the mile again as soon as his fitness at higher distances is solid, at which time he should be able to handle the speedwork, assuming that he trains for like a 1500/5000m guy this time, rather than an 800m/1500m guy, which was getting him injured the past five years, when he had gotten away from his longer distance strength work.
well lets look at this race vs PRs -
solinsky pr: 12:55
yesterday : 13:23
change: +28 secs. And that is considered a successful race.
webb pr: 13:10
yesterday: 13:37
change: +27 seconds
was webb's 5k pr soft? maybe yes, maybe no. But maybe that wasn't so bad for webb.
for the people who say this is a bad result, i don't think anyone is expecting Alan to be a world beater again this year (assuming this does in fact become his first full legit healthy season since 2007). this year i'm looking for him just to return to relevance. If all he does is drop 20 seconds from this season opener, which i think is probably guaranteed as long as he is healthy all summer, then he's back. Then with one healthy year under his belt, by next year he could be actually back in contention against the big boys, going for sub 13, competing for the win, etc. So I think this is a very good result, I don't think anyone expected him to be in good shape for his first race of the season, especially after being a bit beat up over the winter, and pop off like a 13:20 or anything.
I say look for him to run 13:25 in a month.
Webb currently brings to mind Jim Ryun in 1969. The physical tools are there, but the dominating will to win, the drive to be the best is not.
Exactly. I think Schumacher is taking his time with Webb and letting him develop. I hope to see him run some 1500s/3000s this summer for faster work. I think given some more races he will come around and as pointed out 13:37 for an opener (he didn't run anything indoors!) this is just fine.
"He's a miler"
If there is anything he has shown the last few years it is that he is NOT a miler anymore.
Can we please acknowledge that some of the top collegiate athletes (notice I didn't say world or US professionals) absolutely destroyed him? Why are we insistent on living in the past? Yes he's the American record holder, and that's great, he HAD a great run. 13:37 does not deserve it's own thread. Where's Eric Jenkins' thread? The guy drops his PR from 14:04 to 13:18 and people are celebrating Webb's 13:37? And you can't compare Webb and Solinsky because Solinsky's 13:23 is not only nearly 15 seconds in front of Webb, Solinsky's ceiling is much higher, as he has run much faster not that long ago. When is the last time Alan Webb was a real threat in a race? I can't remember either. Enough talk about Alan Webb. We aren't starting threads devoted to Diego Estrada, Eric Jenkins, Parker Stinson, etc. all of whom beat Alan Webb, and did so quite handily, so stop treating Alan Webb like he's ever going to return to form. His ceiling isn't high anymore. I know he has his fans and its not that I don't want him to do well, but saying he's back and acting like he's going to do anything relevant anymore is just delusional. Let's all acknowledge he had a great run while it lasted, and put this thread to rest.

Huh? letting him develop? For what? His masters debut?
There are a multitude of collegiate runners and other has beens who could run 13:37. He's about as relevant as Wariner is in the 400. Well, Wariner isn't pulling up the rear. This isn't Webb's first rodeo. If he isn't race ready in late April, he ain't gonna be ready for nationals and he defineatly won't be running any races in Europe.
However, I would give him a very good chance at winning our 4th of July 5k, providing Schumacher keeps letting him "develop".
Good job. Now he needs ear plugs so someone does not rattle his cage. Great talent, perhaps a touch soft mentally.
