At this point, Dave Smith is pretty much in a win-win situation.
If German never does much as a pro it will show that it wasn't really Dave's fault that he didn't live up to his promise in college. If German does great as a pro it will show that Dave did not screw him up but helped him built up a long-term base in spite of injury issues.
Either way Dave wins.
Let's give this a thought.... He had a great senior year in high school, he was absolutely phenomenal!
He goes to college and has a fantastic freshman year, NCAA champion and breaks a lot of records, also phenomenal!
From his sophomore year to the near end of his senior year in college he is basically a nobody.
Could it be that German Fernandez was a high school blow out? He trained to hard and to early in his career. It wore him down and ruined himself. None of Smith's other athletes seemed to have had the same issues as Fernandez has had, so why do we blame Smith and not blame Fernandez, or his high school coach, instead?
