If the government decided to abandon democracy and the constitution, and had the military in support, would civilians be able to overpower them?

a retarded premise. Much - probably most - of the US military would refuse to engage the enemy in your story. I think that's why you see this bizarre focus by the feds on domestic home grown terrorists and why they label ex-military as potential threats. They're trying to build a case for if/when they have to face down a populace fed up with an out of control govt. Also explains why agencies like USPS, FEMA, TSA, Homeland, IRS, etc. have been stocking up on tons of ammo & all sorts of weaponry..
An armed insurgency in the US could do far greater damage to a military than the armed insurgencies in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Vietnam kicked the holy shit out of racist white US militants
There are at least 50 million gun owners in the U.S, that number is probably closer to 100 million.
The military has about 2.5 million active duty, reserve, and guard members. The majority of this number while trained, are not equipped with front line gear, weapons, and are not combat ready. While the military does have approximately 2000 combat aircraft, those aircraft are dependent on timely fuel deliveries.
Civilian gun owners in the U.S would overpower any military on earth including its own in a matter of weeks.
Imagine if the Indians had rifles when the spanish and english landed in the new world. Thats about how it would go.
Ummm... ever heard of drone warfare?
Would civilian gun owners have Rambo, Chuck Norris, The Incredible Hulk and Wonder Woman on our side?
civilian gun ownership seemed to work pretty well for the insurgents in iraq, yes?
Fuel deliveries bro, Fuel deliveries.
The oil/fuel delivery logistics is a nightmare bro. You'd also have desertion rates pushing 50% the first week bro.
bro.
truth is.... wrote:

They were happy to get rid of Saddam at first.
Also their ownership rates were significantly lower than in the U.S and Iraq is a much smaller country than the U.S, and the logistical end point was Iraq, in the U.S the logistical start points and end points are all over the place.
It would be over mostly in a week, with some small pockets of hold outs lasting a few months until they starved.

Imagine if the real Indians had guns when the English landed. Oh wait, they did. Look what happened.

How many of those supposed 100 million gun owners would actually take up armed resistance though. I feel like the number of those that engage the military would be much, much lower.
Vegas says the money is on the US military.
Our government's allies would give the military fuel/resources to crush us. Plus, they've got plenty of fuel to last long enough to destroy all threats. I heard one time that the military has 2 years of fuel reserves.
Two words: air superiority
It would never happen since the government has been controlling the vast majority of the populous for years through the fluoride in the water.
Yankee individualists and Frontiersmen would obliterate the professional soldiers, who merely have aircraft and nukes.
There's no way in hell we can give up our assault rifles. Look at the homes Obama has stolen from families in Jerusalem recently.
Civilian gun owners would not stand a chance at all. It would be over in a heartbeat. Gee Wiz I wonder if all these rednecks with guns could handle a dozen tanks with air to ground support. Game over man, game over.
A bunch of short rice farmers beat the US Military four decades ago nothing has changed. The US military has not "WON" a war since 1946 and then it wasn't just them they basically had the whole world helping them do it.
