That was the same person who called her ethical. Guess what? Having sex with the students you are coaching is unethical!

I know for a fact that Nichole Denby was not the athlete with whom Bev had an affair. Nichole did not return to UT to be coached by Bev and has not worked with her since leaving in 2004 to pursue her professional athletics career. Nichole always worked hard. The way she was treated by Bev was in fact one display of why coaches should not have relationships with their student-athletes. Despite great work ethic and much talent, Nichole was not given the same amount of guidance and support as the student-athlete who was closer to Bev and perhaps not as hardworking or talented.
The other athlete was more hard working and talented - in the bedroom!
Kearly placed her sexual needs before the needs of her athletes. She played favorites for sexual favors.
Just a thought. Maybe it wasn't just SEX. Maybe Bev really cared about this individual. She has been a college track and field coach for years. Unless there are other instances that we don't know about, this is Bevs only indiscretion.I'm not saying it is right that she had a affair with a student-athlete but let's not assume it was JUST about sex. Just another perspective.

Kearny should have shown professional judgment and displayed ethical behavior by avoiding entering into any kind of physical relationship with a student/athlete. That is why she is out of a job! She crossed the line and is now paying the price.
Entering into a homosexual relationship with a teenager still working through her own sexual identity was even more foolhardy. If the student in question eventually realized that she is in fact not a lesbian, this homosexual encounter with a much older person could scar her for life.
Imagine if you had a homosexual relationship with your college coach when you were a teenager and eventually you came to realize that you were not gay. How would you feel? Imagine if you got married, had kids, and went to church carrying the guilt, shame, and regret of entering into homosexual relationship that you did not really understand. How would you feel?
At the time of the affair, how old was the coach and the student?
On Bev's way out the door at the University of Texas, she shared lots of information concerning the mens head coach with all the athletic directors. Hopefully this new information concerning his personal issues with drinking, women and his being stopped by legal authorities on more than one occassion, will speed up his retirement in 2013.
A textbook case of power gets p*ssy. P*ssy takes power away.

Assuming it really did start in July of 2002 as reports indicate, the coach was about 45 and the student athlete had just finished her sophomore year and was 19 or 20. If the athlete is who I suspect it may have been, she was already 20 in July.

I recently saw an article that mentioned Nichole Denby doing some training under Bev's guidance in Austin this fall after Nichole had returned to UT to finish her degree. I can't find the article now or I'd have posted a link. Maybe the article was mistaken though.
This doesn't necessarily have anything to do with the Kearny affair, but the other Longhorns star hurdler who was a teammate of Nichole's from 2001 to 2004 returned to UT in 2012 specifically to be trained by Coach Kearney for the London Olympics. Although she made it to London, part of her post-collegiate athletic career has been a little different than Nichole Denby's.

The student athlete has not come forth so until she does, we're all just guessing as to what happened and what it meant to either or both of them. I am not saying it was right, it was a huge mistake on both their parts. I just don't think we should jump to the conclusion that it was a co-erced relationship. I definitely had a different experience with Bev as a friend and co-worker than a lot of other people report.
As a professional and a 45 year old, Kearny should have known better than having a sexual relationship with a teenager under her professional influence. College professors get flirted with daily by their students. However, they know not to cross the line because it's unethical and it could end their career.

But Coach Kearney was still the person in the position of authority and power. She had a responsibility to resist the temptation to get involved with her subordinate young student athlete who was 25 years her junior. I have no idea who made the initial advances, but since you mentioned the possibility, I think there's a pretty good chance that the athlete involved may have also been gay.
So Bev Kearny gets the axe but UT's offensive coordinator gets a slap on the wrist?????

Football rules. Men rule.
This will be interesting to watch unfold. I think Bev absolutely has a case. The stigma of her having a lesbian relationship was the real key IMO. Look at current NCAA male coaches MARRIED to their former athletes...one could argue they too had an 'inappropriate consensual adult relationship' and the marriage is pretty obvious proof that it happened.
Kudos to Bev. I hope laughs all the way to the bank on this one.

What does behavior of the men's coach have to do with her "chicken-hawking" one of her athletes?
That is grasping for straws. One of the craziest people in NCAA track is out and that is better for everyone.
The student did not make a complaint in Applewhite's case. Applewhite was the one who raised the issue himself. Plus, the age gap was much smaller. Furthermore, Applewhite was not in a supervisory position over the student. If a much younger male student, who Applewhite was directly coaching, made a complaint of unwanted sexual contact, the result would have been the same as Kearny's.
