Double the underoos and wear a wool sock. You'd be shocked how much of a difference an extra layer or two can help. Also, if you live in a windy area, something that doesn't "breathe" will cut down on unnecessary wind exposure.

If your really thinking about that then you shouldnt be running, i live in canada and its pretty damn cold but i find myself sweating in the coldest temps.
I leave mine at home.
Poor college runner from North Dakota.... shoved a plastic Walmart bag between two pairs of sporthills on many days when the windchill was -20 and colder.
wow, i can't believe i clicked onto this thread...jus sayin'..carry on?

I use a sock. Simple, free...
A compression sock?
Your a 10 ply buddy
This sounds weird, but it is a trick my old coach tought me, and I'll never forget it.
On really cold days (under 15 degrees farenheit), I usually plan ahead. Go to the grocery store, and yes I know they're out of season in the Winter, but pick up a cucumber that's slightly larger than your dork.
Next, here's the important part, you need to carve out the inside of the cucumber (I actually have a cucumber scraper). Be VERY careful not to puncture or otherwise rip the skin. Cucumber skin is warm, windproof and naturally wicking. Pop that on and you'll be warm as a bun in the oven!
One cucumber will usually last a month or so if you treat it with linseed oil. Happy running!
simple. i wear compression shorts under my shorts. keeps the fella close to your body. compression shorts and running shorts are all i need in the winter. kept lil jimmy warm in temps below zero
So you refuse to wear the appropriate clothing for the current weather then you start a thread asking specifically to how to cope the cold weather.
Congrats, you're a moron.
Ive put an extra sock down there or a glove.

I wear shorts over them for this very reason.
I hate you
Slightly spectical about the -30 deg C claims. I live in the north of Sweden and I draw the line on outdoor running at -15 deg C. It has nothing to do with clothing, it has to do with keeping your airways warm. Even with a heat exchange mask, the incoming air doesn't come up to a sufficient temperature to keep your airways healthy. You can be as tough as you like but your lungs and airways are still made of sensitive tissue. Ditto for eyes and ear passages. It's one thing to walk to the store when it's -30 or -40, it's another thing to stress your body for an hour or more in those temps. Not even the cross country skiers are out. It's a mugs game to subject your body to that kind of irreversible damage for the sake of being a tough guy. I move into the gym when the temp here drops below -15 deg. 3 to 4 months of forced strength training and treadmill technique workouts isn't so bad in the grand scheme.
Ummmmmmm...ever heard of Jordan Hasay?

hahaha reply of the day. Golden.
The specific product I use, which proved good enough for 0 degree F windchill, is http://shop.craftsports.us/active-ws-gunde-short-mens.htmlI also wear these under my shorts even when it's not that cold to prevent chafing. The sizing is on the small side, so don't get them in small unless u r like 5'3" 110 pounds.

Lately it's been fairly cold here (high 30s).
I know the OP is from a year ago, but high 30's isn't cold.
If he had "excruciating" pain, it's probably because his appendage is the product of some weirdo bolt on surgery in Scandinavia, not the weather.
If that isn't the case then he is a garden variety puszy.
I use one of those long tube socks like they wore circa 1974 in the NBA.
I always have an extra sock tucked in there. I don't know how cold weather would be any different.
