Probably not that low. His 5k last year puts him at 52nd in D1 and his 10k puts him at 74th

I wouldn't say this makes D3 "better" than D1 but you do have a bit of a point.
The lack of athletic scholarships in D3 make it harder for for coaches to acquire those rent-a-Kenyans that dominate the ranks of D1 and D2, resulting in a more pure student-athlete competition.
The problem is some d3 schools are notoriously, shall we say, "generous" with giving out "academic" scholarships to top runners. Combine that with racial quotas in admission and you get kids getting paid to run for schools they shouldn't even be getting into in the first place.
